Girls basketball roundup: Kotchman scores 34 as Trinity rolls into final
Sierra Kotchman and Trinity opened the season in high gear Friday night at the Greensburg Salem tournament. Kotchman scored 34 points and made seven of the Hillers’ 11 three-point field goals as Trinity rolled to an 86-47 victory.
Trinity will play either Greensburg Salem or Saltsburg in the championship game tonight.
Kotchman scored 18 points in Trinity’s 15-point first half. The Hillers led 81-40 after three quarters.
Alayna Cappelli also had a big night for the Hillers by scoring 20 points, including four three-pointers. Mary Dunn also scored in double figures with 20 points.
Lexi Petrof (17) and McKenzie Jester (15) combined for 32 of Ligonier Valley’s 47 points and made all but four of their team’s field goals.
Carmichaels 50, Clairton 12:Gina Ranieri led a balanced Carmichaels attack as the Mikes cruised into the championship game of the Charleroi tournament with a 50-12 victory over Clairton.
Carmichaels had at least four players score nine points. The Mikes led 20-5 after one quarter, 30-8 at halftime and held Clairton to four field goals in the game.
South Fayette 62, Hopewell 21: South Fayette held Hopewell to only five field goals and the Lions cruised to a 62-21 victory in the first round of their tournament.
The Lions, who advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA championship game last year, led 18-2 after one quarter. Sam Kosmacki led three Lions in double figures with 13 points. Carlee Kilgus followed with 12 points and Emily Anderson tossed in 10.
South Fayette will play North Hills tonight.
Penn Hills 50, Canon-McMillan 41: Penn Hills, a WPIAL finalist last season, held Canon-McMillan to three third-quarter points and defeated the Big Macs 50-41 in the first round of the North Allegheny tournament.
The combination of Desiree Oliver and Jade Ely pushed the Indians intot the title game. Oliver scored a game-high 23 points and Ely had 17.
Canon-Mac, which by only 23-21 at halftime, was led by Cheyenne Trest’s 19 points. becca Turney followed with 15 points but only three C-M players managed to score.
Lincoln Park 51, Beth-Center 41:Beth-Center’s Kinlee Whited scored 14 points and Mary Gustovich chipped in with 13 but Lincoln park edged the Bulldogs 51-41 in the first round of the Freedom tournament.
Central Valley 61, Fort Cherry 36: Krista Sudar scored a game-high 24 points to push Central Valley to a 61-36 victory over Fort Cherry in the Montour tournament.
Kayla Underwood added 11 points for CV, which broke the game open with a 27-point third quarter.
Shannon Relihan led Fort Cherry with 12 points.
Brownsville 44, Chartiers-Houston 39: Brownsville held Chartiers-Houston to 13 second half points in a 44-39 vicory in the Brownsville Tournament.
Maris seto scored 28 points and Allie SEto added 12 points for Brownsville. Alexa Williamson led C-H with 17 points.
Avella 56, Mapletown 44: Grace Lengauer scored 12 points to lead Avella to a 56-44 win over Mapetown in the Avella Tournament.
Avella held Mapletown to 11 first-half points.
Kayla Smith led Mapletown with 17 points.
Peters Township 58, New Castle 16: Madison Kerr scored 15 points and Cameron Morgan added 11 as Peters Township sotpped New Castle 58-16 in the Peters Township Tournament.
Keystone 56, California 35: Keystone forged a 13-point halftime lead and ran away with a 56-35 victory over California at the Slippery Rock Tournament.
Bailey Vig had a team-high 13 points for the Trojans (0-1), who trailed 26-13 lead at halftime and drew to within nine points at the end of the third quarter. Dominique Gaston had eight points for Cal and Jenna Miller was held to two.
West Greene 77, Waynesburg 45: McKenna Lampe and Madison Lampe combined for 43 points as West Greene ran away with a 77-45 win over Waynesburg in a non-section game.
McKenna Lampe had a team-high 23 and Madison added 20. Marissa Rhode finished with 11 points for the Pioneers (1-0), who outscored the Raiders, 30-4, in the fourth quarter. Kirsten Garber scored a team-high 21 points for Waynesburg (0-1) and Celine Monica added 14.
Burgettstown 53, Bentworth 31: Kacie Prasko scored 21 points to lead Burgettstown to a 53-31 victory over Bentworth in the Avella Tournament.
Malia Castellino added 15 points for the Blue Devils. Katie Tarr grabbed 10 rebounds.
Heather Chester and Grace Marchezak each added 11 points for the Bearcats.
Ringgold 42, McGuffey 36: Bailey Cooper scored 25 points to send Ringgold to a 42-36 win over McGuffey in the Montour Tournament.
Katie Demi scored 25 of the Highlanders’ 36 points.
In other games
The Jefferson-Morgan girls defeated Apollo-Ridge, 43-33, in the Springdale tournament and Charleroi routed Monessen, 70-18, in the Cougars’ girls tournament. No details of these games were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
