Trinity bounces back; Charleroi runs record to 4-0
Senior center Mary Dunn scored a game-high 21 points Thursday night and Trinity bounced back from its first loss of the season by defeating visiting Keystone Oaks 73-44 in the Section 5-AAA opener.
Trinity (1-0, 3-1) trailed 13-10 after one quarter before dominating the middle quarters, outscoring the Golden Eagles 48-21.
Dunn was one of three Trinity players to score in double figures. Sierra Kotchman had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Alayna Cappelli scored 12 points, with nine coming at the free-throw line. Trinity made 23 of 27 free throws.
Keystone Oaks (0-1, 1-3) was led by Gillian Piccolino with nine points.
Charleroi 50, Beth-Center 35: Maria Claybaugh scored 23 points to power Charleroi to a 50-35 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 4-AA game.
Kaitlyn Riley chipped in with 11 for the Cougars (1-0, 4-0), which led 23-4 after the first quarter.
Kinlee Whited had a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Washington 47, Waynesburg 26: Tajah Gordon scored a game-high 17 points and was one of two Washington players with double-doubles as the Prexies extended their winning streak to four games with a 47-26 win over host Waynesburg in the Section 4-AA opener.
Gordon also grabbed 12 rebounds, and teammate Mikala Maltony scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. Washington is 1-0 in the section and 4-1 overall.
Waynesburg received 13 points and 12 rebounds from Celine Monica.
Peters Township 62, Baldwin 36: Undefeated Peters Township shook off a slow start and scored 40 points over the middle quarters en route to a 62-36 victory over visiting Baldwin in the Section 4-AAAA opener.
Peters Township (1-0, 4-0) trailed 10-7 after one quarter, then scored 20 points in each of the next two quarters to forge a 47-28 lead.
Junior guard Alyssa Konopka had a big game for the Indians, scoring a game-high 25 points and making five shots from three-point range. Konopka was the only PT player with more than eight points.
Kayla McCormick led Baldwin (0-1, 2-2) with nine points.
Bishop Canevin 70, Burgettstown 24: Bishop Canevin wasted no time in taking control of the Section 3-AA opener at Burgettstown and sending the Blue Devils to their first loss of the season, 70-24.
Bishop Canevin (1-0, 2-1), the WPIAL runner-up last season, led 33-0 after one quarter and made 14 three-point field goals in the game. Erin Joyce scored 26 points for Canevin and Gina Vallecorsa followed with 13 points.
Katie Tarr led Burgettstown (0-1, 3-1) with nine points.
California 70, Geibel Catholic 17: California got its first victory of the season in imnpressive fashion, blowing out Geibel catholic 70-17 in the Section 3-A opener.
California (1-0, 1-3) led 18-6 after one quarter and 43-13 at halftime before outscoring the Gators 19-1 in the third quarter.
Ten players scored for California, led by Jenna Miller and Bailey Vig with 14 points apiece. Marissa Bitonti followed with 13 points.
Geibel is 0-1, 0-3.
Frazier 54, Bentworth 48: Brooke Poling scored 18 points and keyed a 23-8 run by Frazier in the third quarter that produced a 54-48 win over Bentworth in a Section 4-AA game.
Frazier (1-0, 3-2) trailed 25-23 at halftime.
Heather Chester scored a season-high 27 points for the Bearcats (0-1, 2-2).
Quaker Valley 49, McGuffey 39: Aria Alston-Smith and Alana Davison combined for 35 points to lead Quaker Valley to a 49-39 win over McGuffey in a Section 5-AAA game.
Alston-Smith led the way with 17 and Davison added 15 for Quaker Valley (1-0, 2-2), which led 27-21 at halftime.
Katie Demi scored a game-high 28 points for the Highlanders (0-1, 0-4).
Mapletown 57, Avella 54: Hannah Duesenberry tossed in 24 points and Mapletown held off a fourth-quarter rally to stop Avella, 57-54, in a Section 3-A game.
Mapletown (1-0, 1-4) led 45-34 after three quarters before Avella (0-1, 0-5) outscored the Maples 20-12 over the final eight minutes.
Kelsi Smith grabbed 12 rebounds for Mapletown.
Grace Lengauer’s 23 points paced Avella.
Chartiers-Houston 54, Steel Valley 41: Alexa Williamson scored a game-high 23 points to propel Chartiers-Houston to a 54-41 win over Steel Valley in a Section 3-AA game.
Jules Vulcano added 12 points for the Bucs (1-1, 2-1).
Jordan Butko scored 18 for Steel Valley (0-1, 1-3).
Canon-McMillan 49, Upper st. Clair 38: Cheyenne Trest scored 20 points to help send Canon-McMillan past Upper St. Clair 49-38 in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Becca Turney added 14 for the Big Macs (1-0, 3-1), who led 32-20 at halftime.
Liv McClelland scored eight to pace UsC (0-1, 2-2).

Ringgold improved its record to 2-2 with a 50-37 win over Belle Vernon in Section 4-AAA opener. South Fayette was a 54-42 winner over Chartiers Valley in Section 5-AAA. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
