Girls basketball: Waynesburg ends section skid; Charleroi stays undefeated
Kirsten Garber scored nine of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help Waynesburg defeat Bentworth, 34-31, in a Section 4-AA game Monday night, snapping the program’s 48-game losing streak in section play.
The win snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Raiders dating back to last season and it is their first section win since Dec. 15, 2011, when Waynesburg defeated Brownsville by 18 points.
Garber, who is averging 16.8 points per game, also made all five of her attempts at the free throw line. Waynesburg trailed 21-20 entering the fourth quarter and got all of its scoring from three players. Celine Monica added 11 points for the Raiders (1-1, 1-3). Heather Chester led the Bearcats (0-2, 2-3) with 19 points.
Charleroi 65, Frazier 51: Charleroi put four players in double figures, led by Maria Claybaugh’s 18 points, and the Cougars remained undefeated by defeating visiting Frazier 65-51 in Section 4-AA.
Charleroi (2-0, 5-0) led 26-23 at halftime but pulled away over the final 16 minutes. Claybaugh, who was 8-for-8 at the free-throw line, led the way and was followed by Adrianna Gottheld with 13 points. Kaitlyn Riley and Kyra Watkins rounded out the Cougar’s double-digit scorers with 11 points apiece. Charleroi made 20 of 26 free throws.
Brooke Poling led Frazier (1-1, 3-3) with 13 points.
Bethel Park 61, Peters Township 52: Bethel Park, playing on its home court, pulled away in the final three minutes to deal Peters Township its first loss of the season, 61-52, in Section 4-AAAA.
The game was close throughout as Bethel Park (2-0, 4-1) led 30-26 at halftime and 44-41 after three quarters. Peters Township (1-1, 4-1), which was ranked No. 5 in the state by the Pennlive.com, closed the gap and tied the score with three minutes remaining. But the Black Hawks took the lead and protected it at the free-throw line. Bethel Park made 13 of 15 free throws.
Justina Mascaro had a big game for Bethel Park, scoring a game-high 25 points.
Madison Kerr led PT with 19 points and Ally Zuccarini followed with 13 points.
Trinity 58, Chartiers Valley 34: Trinity held Chartiers Valley to only 11 points in the first half and used a big game by junior forward Abbey O’Connor to defeat Chartiers Valley 58-34 in a Section 5-AAA game played on the Colts’ home court.
Trinity (2-0, 4-1) forged a 23-11 lead at halftime and protected the advantage the rest of the way with a balanced scoring attack and some torrid free-throw shooting. The Hillers were 19 of 24 at the free-throw line.
O’Connor led Trinity with a game-high 16 points. Mary Dunn followed with 15 points and Sierra Kotchman contributed 14.
Chartiers Valley remained winless at 0-2, 0-5.
Canon-McMillan 52, West Allegheny 46: Cheyenne Trest scored a game-high 26 points and Canon-McMillan held off a fourth-quarter rally on its way to a 52-46 victory over West Allegheny in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Kierra King added 11 points and Becca Turney had seven for the Big Macs (2-0, 4-1), who led by 10 points at the end of the third quarter. The Indians bounced back after a seven-point second quarter by scoring 11 in the third and 18 in the fourth. West Allegheny (0-2, 3-2) was led by Reanna Turner’s 12 points.
Washington 65, Carmichaels 37: Tajah Gordon and Mikala Maltony both scored 22 points to help Washington defeat Carmichaels 65-37 in a Section 4-AA game.
Gordon had 13 rebounds and Maltony had 15 for the Prexies (2-0, 5-1), who led by 16 points at halftime. The Mikes (0-1, 2-3) scored 17 first-quater points, but were held to just 20 the rest of the way. They made just 10 of 24 free throws and were outscored 17-3 in the fourth quarter. Kaitlyn Wilson and Gina Ranieri both had 11 points for Carmichaels.
Jefferson-Morgan 46, Fort Cherry 23: Jefferson-Morgan overcame struggles from the free-throw line to defeat Fort Cherry, 46-23, in Section 3-A.
The Rockets (2-0, 5-1) made only five of 16 from the free-throw line and led by just six points at halftime before outscoring the Rangers 27-10 in the second half. Kayla Yorko scored a game-high 10 points, and Nikki Venick and Erin Confortini both added nine. Hannah Greene had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Fort Cherry (0-2, 1-4).
West Greene 58, Mapletown 22: West Greene shut out Mapletown in the second quarter and the Pioneers stayed unbeaten with a 58-22 win in a Section 3-A game.
Madison Lampe led the Pioneers (2-0, 4-0), who are averaging 69.3 points per game, with 13 points. Mackenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor both added 10 points. West Greene outscored Mapletown 21-0 in the second quarter to forge a 33-4 halftime lead.
Kelsi Smith had 10 blocks and 19 rebounds for the Maples (1-1, 1-5).
California 52, Avella 18: Jenna Miller and Bailey Vig combined for 25 points to lift California to a 52-18 win over Avella in a Section 3-A game.
Miller had a game-high 14 points and Vig had 11 for the Trojans (2-0, 2-3), who won their second consecutive game by not allowing Avella to score more than seven points in a quarter. Grace Lengauer had five points for the Eagles (0-2, 1-4).
Montour 50, McGuffey 32: Montour broke open a close game in the final eight minutes and pulled away for a 50-32 victory over host McGuffey in Section 5-AAA.
Montour (1-0, 3-2) trailed 16-15 at halftime but forged a 29-26 lead after three quarters. The Spartans then outscored McGuffey 21-6 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Amalia Esposito led three players in double figures for Montour with 14 points. Courtney Thomas followed with 11 points and Kennedi Stevenson had 10.
Katie Demi scored a game-high 19 points for McGuffey (0-2, 0-5).
Burgettstown 53, Wilkinsburg 27: Three players scored in double figures and Burgettstown defeated Wilkinsburg 53-27 in a Section 4-AA game.
Kate Tarr had 12 points, while Kacie Prasko and Darian Transue both had 10 for the Blue Devils (1-1, 5-1), who led 17-2 after the first quarter and outscored Wilkinsburg 28-17 in the second half. The Tigers (0-1, 0-4) are on a 24-game losing streak dating back to last season.
In other games: Ringgold improved to 2-0 in Section 4-AAA with a 58-48 victory over Thomas Jefferson. Geibel Catholic pulled out a 24-23 win over Monessen in a Section 3-A game played in Connellsville. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
