INDIANA – Megan Smith scored a team-high 18 points, including five in the final 90 seconds, as Indiana held off a late rally by California to upset the 13th-ranked Vulcans 78-72 in a PSAC West Division women’s basketball game Wednesday night.
It was the first conference loss for California (6-1, 8-2) and snapped the Vulcans’ seven-game winning streak.
Smith, a sophomore guard, played a key role during two important stretches. She scored eight points in a 10-0 run by IUP during the third quarter that gave the Crimson Hawks a double-digit lead. Smith also scored five points after Cal had trimmed a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to only six with 2:05 remaining.
Marina Wareham scored 17 points for IUP (5-2, 8-3) and Leslie Stapleton had 15. The Crimson Hawks shot 48 percent from the field.
Cal had four players in double figures, led by point guard Miki Glenn’s game-high 22 points. Shatara Parsons had 18 points, Precious Martin scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Paige Wright contributed 10 points. The Vulcans shot only 33 percent from the field but made 19 of 20 free throws.
The first half was close throughout with IUP leading 35-34 at intermission. The Crimson Hawks scored the first six points of the second half and used a 10-0 run to forge a 57-40 lead. IUP still led by 17 at 63-46 with 7:38 remaining when Cal started a late push. A three-point play by Seairra Barrett and a layup by Parson cut IUP’s lead to 68-62, but Cal could get no closer until a layup by Glenn made it 77-72 with three seconds left.
