Wrestling: No. 3 Derry handles Jefferson-Morgan
Bolstered by five forfeits, Derry defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan 57-20 in a non-section match Friday night.
Derry is ranked No. 3 in Class AA by the O-R.
Jefferson-Morgan forfeited at 138, 145, 152, 182 and heavyweight, which was too much for the Rockets to overcome despite winning two bouts by technical fall and another by injury default.
J-M’s defending state champion Gavin Teasdale remained undefeated in his career with an 18-3 technical fall over Shawn Broadway at 120 pounds. The Rockets’ Billy Bowlen (195) won by technical fall over Matt Marron, 16-1.
• Only one of 14 weight classes were contested in Avella’s non-section dual meet against Avonworth and a pin by Dino Simonelli was enough to help the Eagles to a 30-18 win.
Neither team had a wrestler compete in six bouts and Avella (1-2) won four by forfeit. Simonelli’s pin over Ryan Hunt at 2:30 was the only contested bout. The Antelopes took a quick 18-0 lead after three consecutive forfeits, but did not earn a point the rest of the meet.
• North Hills won seven of 14 bouts on its way to a 42-34 victory over Peters Township in a non-section dual meet.
The Indians got pins from John Macpherson (132), Keagan Lawson (138), Luke Fotta and Devon Cuda (182), and benefitted from three forfeits. Peters Township (2-1) got pins from Brandon Matthews (113) and Michael McAleavy (220). AJ Buckiso (152) also won by decision and Alex Bleack by major decision.
