PITTSBURGH – Derrick Colter made 11 straight free throws and scored 19 points to send Duquesne past crosstown rival Robert Morris 72-65 Saturday.

Colter and backcourt-mate Micah Mason combined to shoot just 7-for-32 from the field. Mason finished with 10 points and Eric James came off the bench to score 13 points with eight rebounds.

Duquesne (10-2) is off to its best since the 1979-80 season. The Dukes tied a school record for pre-New Year’s Day wins set in 1953-54 when they started 10-0. Duquesne plays at Georgia Tech Dec. 29.

Rodney Pryor’s 3 with 3:43 left brought the Colonials to within 62-60. But the Dukes went 10 for 10 from the free-throw line down the stretch. The Colonials scored just two field goals after Pryor’s 3.

Elijah Minnie finished with 23 points and Pryor had 22 for Robert Morris (2-10).

Penn State 63, Drexel 57: Payton Banks scored 20 points and keyed a second-half rally as Penn State overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Drexel 63-57 Saturday night.

Brandon Taylor and Shep Garner added 11 points apiece for the Nittany Lions (8-3), who have won three straight and six of their last seven.

Terrell Allen scored 18 points and Tavon Allen had 16 for Drexel (1-8), which shot just 23.1 percent from the field in the second half.

Penn State took its first lead of the game with five minutes remaining on Taylor’s spinning drive. Moments later, Garner hit a transition layup and Banks followed with a 3-point play with 4:06 left to cap a 15-3 run and put the Nittany Lions ahead 53-47.

Banks scored the next six points for his team, including an acrobatic drive with 50 seconds left, to help the Nittany Lions close it out.
