California hands West Greene first section loss of the season
Bailey Vig scored 21 points to help California pull away with a 53-48 win over West Greene in a Section 3-A game in Rogersville.
Jenna Miller added 10 and Marissa Bitonti had 13 for the Trojans (4-0, 4-3), who led 27-22 at halftime, but the Pioneers took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. Cal, which is the two-time defending section champions, made just 10 of 22 free throws, but secured the win with a 21-point fourth quarter.
The Pioneers (3-1, 6-1), who entered the day as the 10th ranked team in PIAA Class A by PennLive.com, were led by McKenna Lampe’s 23 points and Madison Lampe had 14. West Greene scored just nine points in the second quarter and had its six-game winning streak snapped, dropping to third place in the section standings.
Bishop Canevin 50, Chartiers-Houston 46: Chartiers-Houston overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to tie the score in the final minutes, but Bishop Canevin pulled away with a 50-46 win in a Section 3-AA game on its home floor.
It was a rematch of the PIAA quarterfinal game last March, when the Crusaders defeated the Bucs 69-49. For a stretch Monday night, it seemed the same result was looming, but Chartiers-Houston fought back from a 13-point deficit in the third to tie the score, 44-44, with 1:50 remaining in regulation. A turnover allowed Bishop Canevin to take the 46-44 lead and it capitalized with a three-point play on its next possession before securing the win.
The Crusaders (4-0, 6-1), who led 32-25 at halftime, were led by Erin Joyce’s 23 poitns and Gina Vallecorsa was held to 10, but two were in the final minute. Chartiers-Houston sophomore forward Alexa Williamson had 14 of her 23 points in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jala Walker added 11 for the Bucs (2-1, 5-2), whose average margin of defeat in three losses to BC last season was 19 points.
South Fayette 60, Quaker Valley 36: Sam Kosmacki scored 19 points as South Fayette remained unbeaten with a 60-36 Section 5-AAA win over Quaker Valley.
Mikayla Fetchett had 15 points and Emily Anderson chipped in 12 for the Lions (3-0, 6-0).
Alana Davidson scored 19 points to lead Quaker Valley (1-3, 2-4).
Waynesburg 45, Beth-Center 41: Rachel Elsenheimer and Morgan McDowell combined for 16 fourth-quarter points to help Waynesburg defeat Beth-Center, 45-41, in a Section 4-AA game.
Elsenheimer, who had a team-high 14 points, and McDowell both had eight points in the fourth quarter to help B-C overcome a five-point deficit. McDowell added 12 points for the Raiders (2-2, 2-4), who trailed early in the third quarter after Beth-Center went on a 10-0 run.
The Bulldogs (0-3, 2-4) led 33-29 at the end of the third quarter and were led by Mary Gustovich’s 14 points.
Geibel Catholic 43, Mapletown 33: Geibel Catholic used a strong third quarter to defeat Mapletown, 43-33, in a Section 3-A game.
The Gators (2-2, 3-4) outscored Mapletown, 14-2, in the third quarter and held off a fourth-quarter rally to earn the win, despite making just four of 11 attempts from the free throw line. Geibel was led by Grace Nowicki’s 17 points and Sidney Anderson added 12.
The Maples (1-3, 1-7) were led by Abby Antill, who had a team-high 10 points.
Keystone Oaks 70, McGuffey 39: Maryah Agurs and Kristy Lippert combined for 31 points as Keystone Oaks defeated McGuffey, 70-39, in a Section 5-AAA game.
Agurs had 16 and Lippert had 15 for the Golden Eagles (3-1, 5-4), who led 35-15 at halftime and have surpassed their win total from last season, when they went 4-18. Keystone Oaks made eight three-pointers with four by Alexa Valforte and Gillian Piccolino chipped in 14 points.
Katie Demi had 19 points for the Highlanders (0-3, 0-7), who scored 18 of their 39 points in the third quarter.
Peters Township 71, Moon 49: Moon buckled under the press, turning the ball over 25 times to allow Peters Township to run away with a 71-49 win in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Senior guard Madison Kerr had a game-high 17 points for the Indians (3-1, 6-1), while Alyssa Konopka added 15 and Makenna Marisa had 10. Peters Township led 46-37 at the end of the third quarter before scoring 25 points in the final eight minutes. Ally Zuccaarini had seven steals, and Konopka and Marisa both had six.
Daeja Quick had a game-high 25 points for the Tigers (0-4, 1-6), who have lost six consecutive games.
Washington 54, Bentworth 15: Washington jumped out to a 26-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 54-15 Section 4-AA win over Bentworth.
Tajah Gordon had 16 points and Nicole Hoffman added 11 for the Prexies (3-0, 6-2).
Jena Vito had six points for the Bearcats (0-4, 2-5).
Charleroi 55, Carmichaels 16: Kaitlyn Riley scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds as Charleroi cruised to a 28-4 halftime lead en route to a 55-16 Section 4-AA win.
Maria Claybaugh added 14 points and Kyra Watkins had 11 for the Cougars (4-0, 7-0).
Gina Ranieri had 10 points for Carmichaels (1-1, 3-4).
Jeff-Morgan 69, Avella 27: Kayla Yorko scored 14 points and Jefferson-Morgan led 43-14 at the half on its way to a 43-14 Section 3-A win over Avella.
Nikki Venick added 13 points and Erin Confortini had 12 for the Rockets (4-0, 7-1).
Joelle Gossett led Avella with eight points.
Fort Cherry 41, Monessen 27: Shannon Relihan had 15 points as Fort Cherry earned its first Section 3-A win with a 41-27 victory over Monessen.
Hannah Greene added 10 points for the Rangers (1-3, 2-6), who won despite making just 9 of 25 free throws. Monessen (0-4, 1-6) was 5-24 at the line.
Natalia Holmes led the Greyhounds with 16 points.
Ringgold 49, West Mifflin 45: Ashley Briscoe had 15 points as Ringgold outlasted West Mifflin, 49-45, in a Section 4-AAA game.
Bailey Cooper added 12 points for the Rams (4-0, 5-3), who led 27-19 at the half.
Miranda Ferguson led all scorers in the game for West Mifflin (0-3, 2-5) with 21 points.
