Boys basketball: Beth-Center edges Waynesburg, 70-67

Bradey McDonnell scored 25 points and Nick Pryor made five three-point field goals Tuesday night as Beth-Center rallied in the fourth quarter and edge Waynesburg 70-67 in a Section 4-AA game on the Bulldogs’ home court.

Waynesburg (1-3, 3-5) led 29-28 at halftime and 49-48 after three quarters.

McDonnell led three players in double figures for Beth-Center. Luke Hess scored 19 points and Pryor finished with 15, the latter’s total being scored exclusively on three-pointers.

Mitch Warman match McDonald’s big game by scoring 25 points to lead Waynesburg. Darton McIntire followed with 23 points and Ron Howard scored 12 for the Raiders.

South Fayette 53, West Allegheny 43: Matt Thomas scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the second half as South Fayette pulled away down the stretch and remained unbeaten in Section 5-AAA with a 53-43 victory over visiting West Allegheny.

It was the first section loss for West Allegheny (3-1, 3-5). The Indian led 20-19 at halftime but Thomas found his scoring touch in the second half and kept South Fayette (3-0, 3-1) unbeaten in the section.

Brett Willner also hit double figures for the Lions with 12 points and Ryhan Culberson scored 11. South Fayette has won three in a row.

Jared Lanni, with 11 points, was the only player in double figures for WA.

Bishop Canevin 76, Fort Cherry 32: Section 3-AA leader Bishop Canevin scored 56 first-half points and cruised to a 76-32 victory over host Fort Cherry.

The Crusaders (4-0, 6-2) built a 35-8 lead after one quarter and led 56-14 at halftime.

Bishop Canevin made 11 three-point field goals and had three players score in double figures, led by Mitchell King with 19 points. Justin Dix followed with 12 points and Kellen Gustine had 11.

Devon Browns’ seven points led Fort Cherry (0-4, 1-6).

Washington 61, Brentwood 27: Washington’s defense shut down Brentwood over the final 24 minutes and the Prexies rolled to a 61-27 road victory in Section 3-AA.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Brentwood (2-2, 3-4) and kept Wash High (3-1, 3-4) one game behind section-leading Bishop Canevin.

Washington led 15-10 after one quarter, then held Brentwood to only 17 points over the remainder of the game. The Prexies led 29-14 at halftime and 47-18 after three quarters. Brentwood managed only 10 field goals in the game and neither team made a three-point shot all night.

Wash High had a balanced offense as Markel Pulliam, Nate Swart and Isaiah Robinson each scored 12 points.

Brentwood did not have a player score more than seven points.

Moon 82, Peters Township 78: Austin Hoffman scored eight of his 14 points in a 27-point fourth quarter as Moon downed Peters Township 82-78 in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Jared Smith led Moon (2-2, 5-3) with 20 points and Nick Castleveter added 15.

Nick Valentic scored a game-high 27 points for the Indians (2-2, 6-2), who were outscored 27-16 in the fourth quarter. Clayton Yeates had 16 points and Mike Cortese 11.

Chartiers-Houston 66, Burgettstown 45: Chartiers-Houston used a pressing defense to make a 17-5 run in the third quarter that paved the way for a 66-45 win over Burgettstown in a Section 3-AA game.

Cam Hanley scored 15 points and A.J. Myers 11 for the Bucs (1-3, 4-4). Andrew Clark had two of his three three-point field goals in the third quarter.

Max Shaw led Burgettstown (1-3, 2-6) with 16 points.

Brownsville 96, Bentworth 35: Brownsville outscored Bentworth, 44-6, over the second half on the way to a 96-35 win in a Section 4-AA game.

Noah Brown led Brownsville (3-0, 7-0) with 22 points. Tyron Brown added 15 and Shandon Marshall and James Holcomb each scored 12.

Steven Harner led Bentworth (0-4, 2-5) with 11 points.

Avella 70, Jefferson-Morgan 53: Kevin Painter and Austin Lis combined for 31 points to lead Avella to a 70-53 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 3-A game.

Painter scored 17 points and Lis added 14 for the Eagles (2-2, 2-5).

Gage Clark and Casey Wilson each scored 13 points for J-M (0-3, 0-8).

California 56, West Greene 34: John DeFranco scored 22 points and California pulled away over the final eight minutes to defeat host West Greene 56-34 in Section 3-A.

The win keeps California (4-0, 6-1) undefeated in section play. West Greene (2-1, 4-3) lost for the first time in the league.

California led 21-16 at halftime and 35-26 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, California’s Kass Taylor scored all of his 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans outscored West Greene 21-8.

J.C. Conaway scored 15 points for California.

Craig Weaver had a double-double for West Greene, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Zach McHenry followed with 14 points.

Monessen 105, Geibel Catholic 29: All you need to know about the Section 3-A game between Monessen and host Geibel Catholic was the score after one quarter: Monessen 40, Geibel 0.

It was never close.

Monessen remained unbeaten against Class A competition and won its fourth in a row, rolling over Geibel 105-29.

Monessen (3-0, 6-2) led 70-11 at halftime and 93-23 after three quarters. The Greyhounds made 46 field goals and put six players in double figures led by Dwight Moore’s 18 points.

Jaden Altomore scored 16 points, Lavalle Rush had 15, Justic Rice scored 14, Lyndon Henderson also had 14 and Jaron Youngblood had 11.

Cleb Miller scored 13 points to lead Geibel (1-3, 2-4).
