Myers rallies C-H to title

A.J. Myers scored 37 points, including a clutch three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining, and Chartiers-Houston overcame a 17-point deficit in the first quarter to rally and beat South Side Beaver 63-62 Tuesday night in the championship game of the Bentworth tournament.

South Side Beaver (6-5), which lost a four-point game to C-H (6-4) earlier in the season, forged a 25-8 lead after one quarter. Myers, however, rallied the Bucs by scoring 35 of his 37 points after the opening quarter.

SSB led 31-23 at halftime and Myers took control in the second half, when he scored 26 of his points. The Rams led 62-59 before Myers hit a deep three-pointer from the left wing to tie the game. Chartiers-Houston then stole the ball, which set up a game-winning free throw by Myers with five seconds remaining. SSB attempted to rush the basketball upcourt by turned it over, sealing the win for Chartiers-Houston.

Myers made 10 field goals, including five three-pointers, and converted 12 of 20 free throws.

Quae Thompson led SSB with 17 points and Tyler Berger followed with 15.

Burgettstown 48, Avella 44: Sophomore forward Max Shaw 14 points and Burgettstown combined a big second quarter with a large advantage at the free-throw line to defeat host Avella in the third-place game of the Eagles’ tournament.

Burgettstown (4-7) trailed 11-10 after one quarter but outscored Avella 20-4 in the second quarter for a 30-15 lead. Avella (3-7) stormed back in the third quarter and closed to within 34-31 with eight minutes remaining.

Burgettstown led 47-44 when Avella missed a potential game-tying three-pointer and McGuffey tacked on a free throw with one second remaining. Burgettstown outscored Avella 13-4 at the free-throw line.

Cody Dobbin and Kevin Painter had strong offensive games for Avella. Dobbin led the Eagles with 15 points and Painter had 12. Dobbin and Shaw each made the all-tournament team.

Charleroi 61, California 44: Charleroi used a huge game from Sam Miceli to power past California 61-44 in the Charleroi tournament.

Miceli scored a game-high 32 points, including 12 field goals, as the Cougars (7-2) bounced back from a loss to Yough in the opening round of the tournament. John Arnold scored 12 points for Charleroi, which will play Ringgold at 6 p.m. tonight.

Kass Taylor led California (6-3) with nine points. The Trohans led 9-7 after one quarter but were outscored 21-12 in the second quarter.

Beth-Center 44, Carmichaels 41: Bradey McDonnell scored a game-high 18 points and Beth-Center held off Carmichaels for a 44-41 victory, claiming the championship of the King Coal Lions Club Tournament.

McDonnell made two three-pointers for the Bulldogs (5-2), who led by four points at halftime and held off the Mikes’ fourth-quarter rally. Nick Mundell had 15 points for the Mikes (4-4).

Jefferson-Morgan 65, Mapletown 44: Jefferson-Morgan made six of its 10 three-point field goals in the second half as the Rockets pulled away for a 65-44 victory over Mapletown in the consolation game of the King Coal tournament in Carmichaels.

The win was the first of the season for Jefferson-Morgan (1-9) and Mapletown remained winless at 0-9.

Mapletown led 15-10 after one quarter before J-M pulled even at 24-24 at halftime. The Rockets won by scoring 41 second-half points.

J-M’s D.L. Garrett led all scorers with 18 points and Gage Clark followed with 12.

Dustin Lemley scored 15 points to lead Mapletown. Alix Jennette had 12.

Carlynton 69, Fort Cherry 66: Fort Cherry made a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, but a technical foul in the second overtime period led to a 69-66 loss to section rival Carlynton at Avella High School’s Washington County Stocking Stuffer Tournament.

Trailing 52-49 late in regulation, Rob McAnany bobbled an inbounds pass for Fort Cherry, threw up an errant three-point shot, collected the rebound himself and made a turnaround, fadeaway three-point shot at the top of the key to send it to overtime. McAnany led the Rangers (2-8) with 24 points, including 21 in the second half with five three-pointers and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Courtney Mickens led Carlynton with 25 points, including all 11 of its points in the second overtime. The Cougars made 25 of 33 free throws.

Canon-McMillan 73, Brownsville 54: Canon-McMillan used a 17-2 run late in the second quarter and held off a third-quarter rally to defeat Brownsville, 73-54, in the consolation game of the Trinity Holiday Tournament, snapping a six-game losing streak.

Carson Miller had all 13 of his points in the second quarter for the Big Macs (4-6) who trailed 25-24 before the 17-2 run. Brownsville (7-2) scored 22 points in the third quarter, but was held to six in the fourth. The Falcons were led by Noah Brown’s 18 points. Britton Beachy had a game-high 26 for Canon-McMillan.

Quaker Valley 70, Trinity 52: Coletrane Washington made seven three-pointers to help Quaker Valley win the Trinity Holiday Tournament, defeating the host team, 70-52.

Washington had a game-high 25 points and finished the two-day tournament with 13 three-pointers for the Quakers (9-1), who led by 17 points at halftime.

Freshman guard Jaden Nelson led the Hillers (4-5) with 15 points and Joey Koroly chipped in 10.

Frazier 55, McGuffey 48: Frazier got help from three-double digit scorers to claim the McGuffey Holiday Tournament championship, defeating the host team 55-48 in the title game.

Caleb Cox had 16 points, while Damon Lovis and Mark Dillon both had 12 for the Commodores (6-4). Colin Chapman had 20 points for the Highlanders (5-4).

South Allegheny 64, Bentworth 41: Jacob Duval and Twan Iggles combined for 39 points to help South Allegheny defeat Bentworth, 64-41, in the consolation game at the Bentworth tournament.

The Gladiators (1-9), who won their first game of the season, scored 16 points in each quarter and held the Bearcats to 15 points in the first half. Steven Harner led Bentworth with 12 points.

West Greene 61, Hundred W.Va.: Craig Weaver’s 19 points propelled West Greene to a 61-47 win over Hundred in a non-section game on the road.

Weaver, a junior center, also had 20 rebounds and 10 blocks for the Pioneers (4-4), who grabbed a 10-point lead at halftime and pulled away with 17 points in the fourth quarter. Zach McHenry had 14 points and Nathan Brudnock 11 for WG. Holden Moore led Hundred (2-5) with 20 points.

Beaver Falls 89, South Fayette 69: Beaver Falls scored 55 points in the first half and held on for an 89-69 win over South Fayette at the C.J. Betters Tournament on the campus of the Community College of Beaver County.

Donovovan Jeter had 22 poitns and Syron Noyes 20 for the Tigers (9-0), who led by 22 points at halftime. Rhyan Culberson had 17 points for the Lions (3-2).

First Love Christian Academy 88, Ligonier Valley 44: Aneury Parra scored 21 points to help First Love win the Ligonier Valley Holiday Tip-Off Tournament with a 88-44 in over the host team.

Parra, a freshman guard from the Dominican Republic, was named the most valuable player of the tournament. The Knights (12-1) will face Vermont Academy at the Morgantown Holiday Classic tonight at 8:30 p.m.
