California girls win Section 3-A title
Kylie Huffman scored 16 points and California won its 20th consecutive game and clinched its second consecutive outright Section 3-A championship Monday night with a 52-18 victory over visiting Fort Cherry 52-18.
The Trojans (13-0, 20-1) won their ninth straight game by double figures. Cal forged a 22-10 halftime lead and then outscored the Rangers 30-8 in the second half.
Jenna Miller scored 12 points for California, which concludes the regular season Friday at Monessen.
Tina Bellhy finished with 11 points for playoff-bound Fort Cherry (8-5, 10-10).
Upper St. Clair 58, Peters Township 52: Rachel Mazzie had 20 points as Upper St. Clair clinched the final playoff spot in Section 4-AAAA with a 58-52 defeat of Peters Township.
Peters Township (6-7, 12-8) got 13 points from junior Madison Kerr, who moved past 1,000 for her career with her sixth point in the game, but was knocked out of playoff contention.
Maddie Serio added 18 points for USC (8-5, 13-7), which also got 16 points from Deandre Conwell.
Alyssa Konopka led Peters Township with 15 points, while Cameron Morgan added 11.
Charleroi 60, Bentworth 50: Charleroi went on a 24-6 second-quarter run to pull away from Bentworth in a 60-50 Section 4-AA victory.
Adrianna Gottheld scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Sierra Short had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (8-4, 12-8).
Reilly Skerbetz led Bentworth (3-8, 8-12) with a game-high 26 points, while Grace Marchezak added 12 points in the losing effort.
Trinity 56, Montour 13: Mary Dunn had 13 points, 13 rebounds and blocked 11 shots as Trinity handed Montour a 56-13 Section 5-AAA that clinched a playoff spot for the Hillers.
Sierra Kotchman scored 17 points and Alayna Cappelli had 12 for the Hillers (7-4, 14-5), who opened the second half with a 21-0 run.
Emilia Esposito led Montour (1-10, 5-14) with six points.
Bethel Park 58, Canon-McMillan 44: Bethel Park made 12 of its 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat Canon-McMillan, 58-44, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Shannon Conely led the Black Hawks (11-2, 15-4) with 24 points and Justina Mascaro added 17. The Big Macs (6-7, 11-9) trailed 32-16 at halftime, but drew to within eight points at the end of the third quarter. C-M, which is eliminated from playoff contention, trailed by five points with 90 seconds remaining, but Bethel Park sank its free throws to secure its 12th consecutive victory.
Cheyenne Trest scored 19 points for Canon-McMillan.
Seton-La Salle 55, Chartiers-Houston 38: Three players scored in double figures to lead Seton-La Salle to a 55-38 win in a Section 3-AA game.
Nicole Newman led the way with 16 points for the Rebels (11-0, 14-5), Morgan Henderson had 14 and Cassidy Walsh 13.
Jala Youngblood paced Chartiers-Houston (7-4, 13-7) with 15 points. Alexa Williamson added 14.
Brentwood 58, Burgettstown 48: Molly Huffman scored a game-high 22 points and Brentwood held off a Burgettstown rally to secure a 58-48 win in a Section 3-AA game.
The Spartans (5-6, 11-7) secured fourth place in the section behind Huffman and Stephanie Thomas, who added 12 points. Burgettstown (3-8, 10-11) trailed by one point heading into the fourth quarter, but was outscored, 20-11, in the final eight minutes.
Katie Tarr scored 13 points for the Blue Devils.
Waynesburg 62, Frazier 56: Dom Sarra came close to a triple-double and host Waynesburg used a huge advantage at the free-throw line to defeat long-range shooting Frazier 62-56 in a battle of playoff-bound teams in Section 4-AA.
Sarra scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and also had seven assists for Waynesburg (8-3, 13-6).
Frazier (5-5, 9-10) made 10 three-point field goals but the Commodores were 0-for-4 at the free-throw line. Waynesburg, meanwhile, made 15 of 28 free throws and went 9-for-13 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Mitch Warmen scored 16 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for Waynesburg.
Alvin Ross led Frazier with 18 points and Damon Lovis had 16, including four of the Commodores’ three-pointers.
California 80, Mapletown 22: Tray Matthews led four California players in double figures with 22 points and the Trojans rolled to an 80-22 thumping of visiting Mapletown in Section 3-A.
KC Zajicek followed with 14 points for Cal (10-1, 15-4), Kass Taylor scored 13 and Jaycee Conaway tallied 10.
Matt Hein scored 10 points for Mapletown (1-9, 2-18), which was held to eight points in the second half.
Fort Cherry 53, Carlynton 50: Fort Cherry’s Devon Brown made two free throws with six minutes remaining and Carlynton’s three-pointer fell short as the Rangers defeated the Cougars, 53-50, in a Section 3-AA game.
Rob McAnany led the Rangers with 19 points and Justin Iskey added 15 to help Fort Cherry (3-9, 4-15) snap a seven-game losing streak. The Rangers led by two points after three quarters and Carlynton (1-11, 6-14) missed the backend of a one-and-one with 10 seconds remaining. Brown’s two free throws forced Carlynton, which was led by Courtney Mickens’ 19 points, into a desparation three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Belle Vernon 58, Ringgold 44: Belle Vernon opened the game on a 22-9 run and made that lead stand, defeating Ringgold, 58-44, in Section 4-AAA.
Tom Rodriguez scored 14 points, Travis Snydere 13 and Devin Hennon 10 for Belle Vernon (2-10, 7-12).
Nico Law had 12 points, while Dakota Browning added 10 for Ringgold (3-9. 7-12).
