Vulcans beat No. 5 IUP again
Kaitlyn Fratz scored 21 points and had seven assists, and visiting California forced fifth-ranked Indiana into 28 turnovers, as the Vulcans cruised to a 76-45, PSAC-West victory in a women’s college basketball game Wednesday night.
The victory moved California (15-2, 18-3) a half-game ahead of Indiana (14-2, 18-2) in the PSAC-West standings and gave the Vulcans a sweep of the season series. The Vulcans had defeated the Crimson Hawks, 73-68, in overtime last month at home.
Irina Kukolj added 17 points, Seairra Barrett 13 and Miki Glenn 11 for the Vulcans, who led 33-17 at the half, limiting the Crimson Hawks to just six field goals in 22 attempts.
Emma Mahady added 10 rebounds and five steals for the Vulcans, who had 18 steals.
Amy Fairman led IUP with 11 points, while Lindsay Stamp, who entered the game as the PSAC’s leding scorer at 20.3 points per game, had 11 rebounds but just seven points.
Washington & Jefferson 88, Geneva 64: Washington & Jefferson stayed within striking distance of the top two spots in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with an 88-64 victory over Geneva Wednesday night.
Fort Cherry High School graduate Beka Bellhy led the Presidents (10-3, 16-4) with 19 points and seven assists, while Taylor Cortazzo added 16 points, Danni Medovich 13 and Alexa DelGreco 12. Valerie Dunlap helped W&J to a 45-24 advantage in rebounding with 14 in the game.
Miranda Heaney led Geneva (2-11, 4-16) with 16 points, while Heidi Mann and Nicole Hyland scored 13 each.
Saint Vincent 81, Waynesburg 57: Shalia Williams came off the bench to score 25 points and grab 10 rebounds in just 28 minutes as Saint Vincent defeated Waynesburg, 81-57, in a PAC game.
Taylor Mathers added 22 points and 14 rebounds in just 22 minutes of playing time as Saint Vincent (12-1, 18-2) raced out to a 40-21 halftime lead.
Bearcats limited Waynesburg (7-6, 10-10) to just 27 percent shooting in the game.
Rebecca Kerr scored 13 points and have five steals, while Heather Davis had 11 points and Lauren Blair 10 for Waynesburg.
Waynesburg 66, Saint Vincent 65: A basket by BJ Durham with four seconds remaining lifted Waynesburg to a 66-65 upset win over Presidents’ Athletic Conference leader Saint Vincent in a men’s basketball game.
Waynesburg led by as many as eight points in the second half but saw the Bearcats take a one-point lead with 10 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Sean Kett, who scored 21 points, setting up Durham’s heroics.
Durham finished with a team-high 16 points for the Yellow Jackets (8-4, 12-9), who scored 24 points off of 17 Saint Vincent turnovers.
Jacob Fleegle and Jason Propst added 12 points each and Kenny Klase had 10 for Waynesburg.
JC Howard had 15 points for Saint Vincent (9-2, 14-6).
Indiana 64, California 56: Shawn Dyer scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as 18th-ranked Indiana held off California, 64-56, in a PSAC-West game.
California trailed just 31-27 at the half and cut what had been as much as a 12-point lead in the second half to six with 48 seconds remaining, but the Crimson Hawks made their free throws down the stretch – hitting 12 of 14 chances from the foul line – to hold on for the win.
Devante Chance added 12 points, while Jeremy Jeffers had 10 for IUP (13-3, 19-3).
Khalil Jabbie had 15 points, while Arman Marks scored 12 and Tony Richardson 11, both off the bench, for the Vulcans (8-9, 12-10).
Geneva 69, Washington & Jefferson 64: Jimmy Leichliter came off the bench to score 25 points, including hitting seven of nine three-pointers, to lead Geneva to a 69-64 PAC win over Washington & Jefferson.
W&J (0-11, 1-19) led 54-51 with 8:49 remaining, but was outscored 18-10 down the stretch by Geneva (5-7, 8-13).
Ethan Adamczyk added 13 points and 15 rebounds for Geneva, which also got 12 points from Tyler Damazo.
Mitch Locher led W&J with 16 points, while Brian Linquist scored 12 and Doug Johnon and Mike Resnik added 10 each.
