Ferrari scores 47, sets two records in Bucs’ victory
For the second time this season, Alec Ferrari set the Chartiers-Houston single-game scoring record when he poured in 47 points in an 80-59 victory over Fort Cherry Friday night in a Section 3-AA game in McDonald.
Ferrari, a 6-0 senior guard, scored 45 points against the Rangers in a Jan. 13 game. Ferrari also set the school record for points in a season with 522, beating the previous mark of Brendan Cypher by one.
Ferrari scored 20 of the Bucs’ 26 points in the fourth quarter and
Cameron Hanley had 13 points for the Bucs (7-7, 12-10), who led 39-20 at halftime.
Devin Brown keyed Fort Cherry (3-11, 4-17) and Rob McAnany scored 14. Anthony Pinazza added 10 points.
Washington 80, Burgettstown 57: Nate Swart scored 24 points and Washington pulled away over the final 20 minutes to defeat visiting Burgettstown 80-57 in the Section 3-AA finale for both teams.
The win was the 11th in a row for Wash High (12-2, 15-6), which finished in second place in the section, one game behind Seton-La Salle. The loss eliminated Burgettstown (5-9, 8-13) from playoff contention.
Wash High led 14-10 after one quarter, then the Prexies stretched their advantage to 37-20 at halftime.
Swart led three Prexies in double figures. Matt Popeck followed with 15 points and Markel Pulliam finished with 10. Ten different players scored for Wash High.
Dylan Dhans had a big game for Burgettstown with 20 points. Hunter Lecker also hit double figures with 11 points.
West Greene 47, Avella 45, OT: Craig Weaver and Bray Jackson combined for 29 points and helped West Greene hold off host Avella, 47-45, in overtime in Section 3-A.
West Greene (5-7, 8-14) led 38-29 entering the fourth quarter, but Avella (1-11, 1-21) roared back and forced overtime at 42-42. The Eagles had to ward off two potential game-winning shots by West Greene in the final 10 seconds of regulation.
West Greene took the lead in overtime but Avella had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds but missed a three-pointer. The Pioneers then secured the win at the free-throw line.
Weaver led West Greene with 15 points and Jackson followed with 15. Cody Dobbin led Avella with a season-high 22 points. Matt Wander also hit double figures with 12 points.
Steel Valley 69, Ringgold 39: Brandon Donovan led four Steel Valley players in double figures with 21 points and the Ironmen pulled away in the second half to beat host Ringgold 69-39 in Section 4-AAA.
Donnie Keyes scored 19 points for SV (11-3, 13-7), Ja’Mier Fletcher had 10 and Ryan McAllister had 10 points including three of the Ironmen’s eight three-pointers. Steel Valley led 26-24 at halftime but outscored Ringgold 43-15 in the second half.
George Martin led Ringgold (3-11, 7-14) with 17 points and Dakota Browning tallied 11.
Monessen 92, California 38: Lavalle Rush and Justin Rice combined for 57 points as Monessen ran away from California, 92-38, in a Section 3-A game.
Rush led the way with 32 points and Rice had 25 for the Greyhounds (12-0, 16-6), who led 61-26 at halftime.
Kass Taylor paced the Trojans (10-2, 16-5) with 11 points.
Canon-McMillan 41, Peters Township 37: Sam Bohn scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to send Canon-McMillan past Peters Township, 41-37, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Britton Beachy scored 12 points for C-M (5-9, 10-12), including two free throws in the last second to ice the game.
Nick Valentic paced Peters Township (3-11, 8-13) with 16 points.
Beth-Center 66, Bentworth 44: Beth-Center finished Section 4-AA play strong, rolling to a 66-44 victory over host Bentworth.
Ryan Beyer scored 24 points to lead Beth-Center (4-8, 11-10), which moved above the .500 mark. Bradey McDonnell scored 15 points and Tyler Ross had 14 for the Bulldogs, who led by 18 points at halftime.
Zach Robker paced Bentworth (2-10, 6-16) with 15 points.
Waynesburg 69, Carmichaels 44: Mitch Warman had a career night to help Waynesburg run down Carmichaels, 69-44, in a Section 4-AA game.
Warman, a 6-2 sophomore forward, had 15 baskets and seven free throws for a career-best 37 points for the Raiders (9-3, 14-7). He also pulled down 17 rebounds, four shy of his season-best 21.
Dom Sarra scored 16 points, had five steals and five assists for the Raiders, who led Carmichaels, 32-16 at halftime.
Jacob Wamsley tossed in 14 points for the Mikes (1-11, 5-17) and Liam Shea chipped in with 13.
Jefferson-Morgan 75, Mapletown 38: Four players scored in double figures to send Jefferson-Morgan to a 75-38 victory over Mapletown in a Section 3-A game.
Rece Henneman led the Rockets (7-5, 12-9) with 27 points. Austin CLark scored 19 points and Nick Gustovich and Christian Randolph had 10 apiece.
Jake Lawson spearheaded the Maples (1-11, 2-20) with 16 points.
Girls results
California 42, Monessen 16: Section 3-A champion California will take a 21-game winning streak into the WPIAL playoffs after defeating host Monessen 42-16 in the Tropjans’ regular-season finale.
California (14-0, 21-1) was led by Baily Vig’s 12 points.
Terae Bradford had more than half of her team’s points, scoring 10 for Monessen (6-8, 8-13).
Canon-McMillan 67, Peters Township 60: Cheyenne Trest tossed in a career-high 28 point to help Canon-McMillan knock off Peters Township, 67-60, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Danielle Parker chipped in with 16 points for the Big Macs (7-7, 12-9), who outscored C-M 36-31 over the final two quarters.
Madison Kerr scored a game-high 30 points for the Indians (6-8, 12-9). Alyssa Konopka added 11.
Carmichaels 49, Waynesburg 35: Molly Roberts had one of her best games of the season, scoring 16 points and leading Carmichaels to a 49-35 victory over Waynesburg in Section 4-AA.
Carmichaels closed the season with a 3-9 record in section play and a 9-13 overall mark. Waynesburg is 0-12, 2-15.
Carolien Cree added 12 points for Carmichaels, which pulled away after leading only 20-17 at halftime.
Kristen Garber paced Waynesburg with 16 points.
