Cal’s Fratz scores 23; Vulcans in West lead

CALIFORNIA – Senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz led four California University players in double figures with 23 points and the Vulcans cruised to a 76-53 victory over Clarion in a PSAC West Division women’s basketball game Sunday the Convocation Center.

The game was rescheduled from Saturday so that the Vulcans could travel to Toronto to attend the funeral of Cal player Shanice Clark, who died Jan. 18.

The win is the fifth in a row for California (16-2, 19-3) and keeps the Vulcans in first place in the West Division.

Fratz scored 20 of her 23 points during the first half, when Cal built a 47-23 lead. The Vulcans ended the half on a 17-2 run.

Fratz made four of six three-point attempts in the game and had three steals.

Point guard Miki Glenn followed with 17 points and five assists for Cal, Emma Mahady scored 11 points and Seairra Barrett contributed 10 points off the bench.

Cal shot 58 percent (18 for 31) in the first half. The Vulcans had a huge advantage at the free-throw line, making 17 of 25 attempts compared to only four of seven for Clarion (1-16, 2-20).

Jasmine Boyd led Clarion in scoring with 16 points in a reserve role. Delrika Jones-Carey scored 14 points, Jen Straw had 11 and Tania Holmes 10.

Cal plays Wednesday at Pitt-Johnstown.
