Waynesburg men hold off Thiel
Jacob Fleegle scored 15 points and Waynesburg overcame a poor second half to hold off Thiel in a 64-58 Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory Wednesday night.
Waynesburg, which led 38-19 at the half, held a 13-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. But Thiel whittled the lead to 58-53 with 4:06 left in the game and trailed 61-58 with 16 seconds remaining.
A free throw by Byrom Louco and two by B.J. Durham in the closing seconds put the game away for the Yellow Jackets (10-4, 14-9), who clinched a home game in the opening round of the PAC playoffs with the victory.
Jason Propst added 11 points for Waynesburg, while Thoams Ellis had a team-high seven rebounds.
Luke Kochka had 14 points and Josh Johnson 12 for Thiel (7-6, 11-11)
Saint Vincent 100, Washington & Jefferson 51: Saint Vincent connected on 18 of 33 three-point field goal attempts in a 100-51 PAC victory over Washington & Jefferson.
JC Howard scored 16 points, Sean Knett and Dan Sinwell 15 each and Austin Ford 10 for Saint Vincent (11-2, 16-6), which made 63 percent of its field goal attempts.
Brian Lindquist led W&J (0-13, 1-21) with 13 points, while Doug Johnson added 10.
Pitt-Johnstown 56, California 52: Ian Vescovi scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lift Pitt-Johnstown over California, 56-52, in a PSAC game.
Vescovi was 8 of 15 from the field, made 5 of 7 free throws and blocked five shots. He helped the Mountain Cats (9-9, 12-10) overcome a poor shooting performance, but free throw shooting led UPJ to the win.
A.J. Leahey, who added 15 points for UPJ, sank two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Mount Cats a 54-50 lead. The Vulcans responded with a layup by Daniel Sapp to draw within two points. UPJ regained possession, but had one of its 13 turnovers. The Vulcans stormed up the court, but missed a layup and a putback attempt. Leahey grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. He sank two free throws with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Cal (9-10, 13-11) was led by Richard Smith’s 16 points and eight rebounds.
