Women’s basketball: W&J upsets Saint Vincent
Danni Medovich’s three-pointer with just over one minute remaining would be the final points of the contest as Washington & Jefferson handed Saint Vincent College just its second PAC loss of the season, 74-73, in a women’s basketball game Wednesday night.
Saint Vincent (13-2, 19-3) had several chances to pull ahead in the closing minute, but Mara Benvenuti missed a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining and Ally Schmidt’s put-back attempt also failed to go down.
Fort Cherry High School graduate Beka Bellhy scored 28 points – including 18 in the first half – and had nine rebounds for the Presidents (11-5, 17-5). Taylor Cortazzo added 18 points and Medovich 12 for W&J, which also got 15 rebounds from Valerie Dunlap and eight assists from Alexa DelGreco.
Taylor Mathers had 21 points for Saint Vincent, while Drew Meeker scored 12 and Schmidt and Jessica Welch 10 in the losing effort.
Waynesburg 80, Thiel 59: Rebecca Kerr had 23 points and six steals in 22 minutes as Waynesburg continually pulled away from Thiel for an 80-59 PAC victory.
Haley Delaney added 12 points, while Heather Davis just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 12-10), which had 12 different players score.
Waynesburg, which remained in fourth place in the PAC standings, forced 25 turnovers, recording 17 steals.
Jaclyn Watkins had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Thiel (4-11, 5-17).
California 79, Pitt-Johnstown 64: Six players scored in double figures and the No. 20 Vulcans extended their winning streak to six games as Cal defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 79-64, in a PSAC game.
Cal (17-2, 20-3) remains in first place with the victory, while the Mountain Cats (6-12, 9-13) have lost eight consecutive games.
Senior Irina Kukolj matched her season-high with 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Vulcans. Junior Lana Doran added 15 points and senior Kaitlynn Fratz chipped in 14 with five steal. Miki Glenn scored 12 points, while Seairra Barrett and Emma Mahady finished with 10 points each.
UPJ led 22-14 with 10:45 remaining in the first half before Cal answered with a 13-0 run, including nine from Barrett and Fratz to take a 28-22 lead. The Mountain Cats answered with a lay-up, but the Vulcans mounted a 14-1 run and took a 45-29 lead into halftime.
UPJ cut the deficit to 10 points early in the second half before the Vulcans pulled away.
