Venick leads J-M to victory

BALDWIN – Junior guard Nikki Venick scored a game-high 21 points and Jefferson-Morgan rode a strong third quarter to a 53-42 win over Cornell in a WPIAL Class A first round playoff game at Baldwin High School Saturday afternoon.

The Rockets (20-2) advanced to the quarterfinals where they will face second-seeded North Catholic (18-5) Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

This is the first time Jefferson-Morgan advanced to the quarterfinals since 1986, when the Rockets lost to Immaculate Conception.

Cornell’s season ended with a 14-8 overall record.

Kayla Yorko and Erin Confortini each contributed nine points for the Rockets.

Jefferson-Morgan led 31-22 at halftime before outscoring Cornell, 16-7, in the third quarter and holding in for the win. Vencik scored 13 of her points during the second half.

Becca Robinson led the Raiders with 18 points.
