California girls run winning streak to 22

California opened the second quarter with a 17-0 run and went on to defeat Sewickley Academy, 63-37, Wednesday night in a Class A girls first-round game at Baldwin.

The win was the 22nd in a row for California (22-1), which has not lost since its season opener.

Lyndsey Huhn scored a game-high 19 points to lead Cal, which led 17-12 after one quarter and 38-15 at halftime.

Bailey Vig contributed 12 points and Kylie Huffman scored 10 for the Trojans, who advance to play Riverview in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Olivia Ryder led Sewickley Academy (12-9) with 12 points.

Riverview 47, Fort Cherry 28: Fort Cherry went more than 16 minutes without a field goal and committed 25 turnovers as the Rangers fell to Riverview, 47-28, in a Class A first round game at Chartiers Valley High School.

Fort Cherry’s season ends with an 11-12 overall record, and the Raiders (16-7) advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 3 California Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Junior guard Sadie Buchser had a game-high 17 points for Riverview, which led 19-8 at halftime and forced the Rangers into 15 first-half turnovers. Freshman Ariel Rafferty added five points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Fort Cherry grabbed an early 4-0 lead, but Riverview answered with a 12-2 run to close out the first quarter. The Raiders switched to a full-court press to force the Rangers’ guards into quick decisions, which led to forced passes inside.

Riverview outscored Fort Cherry, 7-2, in the second quarter and the Rangers did not have a field goal for a span of 16:09, which began after MacKenzie Gerry’s layup with 4:25 remaining in the first quarter.

The Rangers cleaned up their play in the third quarter, but Buscher took over the game; forcing turnovers and scoring eight points in transition to carry Riverview to an 18-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Senior forward Hannah Greene led Fort Cherry with 13 points and senior forward Tina Bellhy had four points with 10 rebounds.

South Fayette 66, Ambridge 43:

Emily Anderson scored 18 points and Autumn Mozick added 16 to lead 10th seeded South Fayette to a Class AAA first-round win over No. 7 Ambridge, 66-43.

South Fayette improved to 17-6.

Sarah Fischer led Ambridge (17-6).

Blackhawk 60, Ringgold 40:

Chassidy Omogrosso scored 32 points to lead top-seeded Blackhawk to a 60-40 win over Ringgold in a Class AAA first-round contest at North Allegheny. Bailey Cooper, who did not play in Ringgold’s preliminary round win over Greensburg Salem, led the Rams with 10 points.

Ringgodl ends the season with a 13-11 record.
