W&J men snap 14-game losing streak

Mitch Locher scored 16 points and led four Washington & Jefferson players in double figures as Washington & Jefferson snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 61-50 victory over Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Confernce game Wednesday night in New Wilmington.

Brian Lindquist added 13 points and 12 rebounds for W&J (1-14, 2-22). Tyler Haas had 12 points and five assists, and Doug Johnson scored 10 points.

W&J shot 50 percent from the field and held Westminster (2-13, 5-19) to only 29 percent shooting.

Paul Carswell paced Westminster with 19 points.

Waynesburg 70, Geneva 62: Waynesburg kept alive its chances of finishing second in the PAC by defeating Geneva 70-62 at Marisa Fieldhouse.

The win moves Waynesburg (12-4, 16-9) into second place, a half-game ahead of idle Thomas More (11-4, 16-8). The Yellow Jackets have completed their PAC schedule. Thomas More plays Saturday at conference leader Saint Vincent.

Jason Propst led a balanced scoring attack for Waynesburg with 14 points. Thomas Ellis followed with 12 points, and Jacob Fleegle and B.J. Durham had 11 each. Fleegle had scored his 1,00th career points in the Yellow Jackets’ win Saturday at Bethany.

Ethan Adamcyzk took game scoring honors with 25 points for Geneva (7-8, 10-14). The Golden Tornadoes were outrebounded by Waynesburg, 42-27.

Seton Hill 63, California 62:

Kameron Taylor made a jumper from the baseline with 12 seconds to play to give Seton Hill a 63-62 victory over California in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

Seton Hill (6-14, 7-17) snapped a six-game losing streak.

The loss dropped California to 9-11 in the division and 14-12 overall. It was the 10th loss by nine points or less for Cal.

Taylor led Seton Hill with 22 points, all coming in the second half. David Windsor added 12 points. Tyler Bowling had nine points off the bench.

Calvin Brown had 19 points for Cal, which led 24-21 at halftime. Richard Smith contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, and Khalil Jabbie had 10 points.

Women’s results

California 73, Seton Hill 54: Hours after landing the No. 2 spot in the season’s initial NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings, California University ran its win streak to eight games with a 73-54 rout of PSAC-West foe Seton Hill at the Convocation Center Wednesday.

The Vulcans (18-2 PSAC, 22-3 overall), ranked 18th in the national rankings, raced to an early lead, which swelled to 41-22 at halftime, and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Miki Glenn paced Cal with 11 points, 11 assists and three steals. Seairra Barrett scored a team-high 14 points, while Emma Mahady scored 11 and Kaitlynn Fratz had 10.

Kelly Brennan scored a game-high 20 points for the Griffins (7-13, 11-15) and Meghan Mastroianni scored 15. Chelsea Apke, who previously played at Washington & Jefferson, scored five points.

Cal finished with a 45-28 advantage in rebounds. Brittany Nelson and Shatara Parsons each finished with five offensive rebounds. Seton Hill had four offensive rebounds.

Washington & Jefferson 63, Westminster 60: Amirah Moore made only two field goals, but her layup with 39 seconds remaining proved decisive as Washington & Jefferson College defeated Westminster, 63-60, in a PAC game at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

W&J (12-5 PAC, 18-6) led by as many as nine (43-34) in the second half before Westminster (4-13, 5-19) chipped away at the lead. With 5:15 remaining, the game was tied, 51-51. The Presidents pulled ahead on a Rachel Bellhy jumper, but the Titans remained close before Moore’s layup provided a 62-57 lead with 39 seconds left. Nine seconds later, Westminster’s Rachel Durbin made a three-pointer but were unable to get any closer despite a couple good looks at the basket.

Beka Bellhy paced W&J with a game-high 8 points, while Valerie Dunlap finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds (12 defensive). Taylor Cortazzo added 11 points for the Presidents, who shoot a dismal 2-for-17 (11.8 percent) from three-point range.

Paige Quinn and Allison Borts scored 12 points apiece to lead Westminster. The Titans shot 21.1 percent (19-for-61) and had 21 turnovers.

Waynesburg 88, Geneva 53: Seventeen players got in for Waynesburg and 14 of them scored as the Yellow Jackets defeated Geneva, 88-53, in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The victory keeps Waynesburg (11-6, 14-10) a game behind Washington & Jefferson or third place in the PAC. Waynesburg was dominant on the boards, finishing with a 58-33 advantage in rebounds. The Yellow Jackets had 25 offensive rebounds on 42 missed field-goal attempts, and they held Geneva (2-15, 4-20) to 15 of 58 shooting (25.9 percent).

Rebecca Kerr led Waynesburg with 18 points in 22 minutes. Addy Knetzer finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes. Hayden Giuliani finished with 13 points and Maura Bobby scored 11.
