Fetchet sends South Fayette to the semifinals

PITTSBURGH – South Fayette junior guard Mikayla Fetchet hit the go-ahead shot with just over a minute remaining and the Lions sank three free throws to clinch a 48-45 victory over South Park in a WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal game Monday night.

The No. 10 Lions (18-6) advanced to the semifinals where they will face sixth-seeded Elizabeth Forward Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. The Eagles (14-11) will play McGuffey in a PIAA playback game tonight at North Hills High School (6:30 p.m.).

Junior center Emily Anderson led the Lions, who trailed by two points at halftime, with 17 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Fetchet chipped in 10 points for South Fayette.

South Fayette led, 42-39, until South Park junior Allison McGrath, who was held to just five points, hit a three-pointer to tie the game. Fetchet answered with a three-pointer and South Fayette sealed the win with free throws in the final minute.

Natalie Clydesdale led the Eagles with 17 points.

Riverview 42, California 38: Riverview held California to three points in overtime and made four free throws in the extra period to clinch a 42-38 upset victory over the third-seeded Trojans in a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal game at Norwin High School.

The No. 6 Raiders (17-7) advanced to the semifinals to face North Catholic Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. California (22-2) will play Jefferson-Morgan in a playback game for the fifth and final spot in the PIAA playback game tonight at Peters Township (6:30 p.m.)

Ariel Rafferty led Riverview with 16 points and Leah Sero chipped in 13 points. The Raiders led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter and held California scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Trojans made headway. They tied the game, 35-35, on senior center Lyndsey Huhn’s three-pointer with 28 seconds to go and held held on to force overtime.

Sophomore Kylie Huffman led California with 13 points and Huhn added 12.
