Cal women knock off Lock Haven
LOCK HAVEN – California overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half and made seven free throws in the final minute to extend its winnings streak to seven games Saturday afternoon with a 71-62 victory over Lock Haven in PSAC play.
Sophomore guard Miki Glenn led the Vulcans (7-0, 11-1) with 21 points and converted all 12 attempts from the free-throw line. She has reached double figures in 11 consecutive games and registered four 20-point games this season. Glenn added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Lock Haven (2-5, 3-8) went on a 13-2 run early to take a 17-6 lead with 11:52 left in the first half before the Vulcans scored 10 straight points to cut the deficit to one point. A three-pointer by Emma Mahady, who finished with 14 points, gave Cal its first lead. The Eagles quickly regained the lead, but Cal answered with a 10-0 run and took a 37-31 advantage into halftime.
Lock Haven scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game, but the Vulcans mounted a 7-2 run and held on for its seventh consecutive win in conference play for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Cal made 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Vulcans shot 41.2 percent from the field and made a season-best 88.5 percent from the free throw line. Kaitlynn Fratz and Irina Kukolj added 12 points for Cal.
Lock Haven senior Rachael McDaniel scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
California 78, Lock Haven 56: California allowed just 18 points in the second half and held on for a 78-56 win over Lock Haven in PSAC play.
Junior forward Richard Smith registered his fifth dobule-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Fellow junior Jake Jacubec led the team with 13 points despite playing only two minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Freshman Tony Richardson added 10 points off the bench, while Khalil Jabbie posted eight points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The Vulcans (5-3, 9-4) took a 43-38 lead into halftime and mounted a 15-3 run over a six-minute span early in the second half to take a 60-43 lead. Lock Haven snapped a five-minute scoreless drought by scoring four-straight points before Cal scored 10-unanswered, including eight by freshman Nick Miller. The Vulcans shot 45. percent from the floor and 74.1 percent from the free throw line. Cal also out-rebounded Lock Haven, 50-31 and scored 36 points in the lane.
Senior Wali Hepburn scored a game-high 17 points for the Eagles (3-4, 3-8). The Vulcans scored 15 points off turnovers and got 40 points for their bench.
