Girls basketball roundup: Williamson propels Chartiers-Houston to victory
A tough defensive effort by the Bucs and a game-high 23 points by freshman center Alexa Williamson lifted Chartiers-Houston over South Side Beaver, 51-34, at the Mahoney Classic Saturday afternoon.
Jalynn Myers added 10 points for the Bucs (7-3), who led 33-15 at halftime and held South Side (3-8) to five points in the first quarter.
Cheyenne Seik led the Rams with 11 points.
Washington 42, Burgettstown 30: Tajah Gordon and Nicole Hoffman combined for 30 points to lead Washington over Burgettstown, 42-30, at the Mahoney Classic.
Gordon had a game-high 18 points and Hoffman added 12 for the Prexies (6-4). Wash High led 27-20 at the end of the third quarter before holding off the Blue Devils (6-4) in the fourth quarter.
OLSH 63, McGuffey 33: Courtney Alexander and Heidi Langhorst each scored 19 points and Our Lady of Scared Heart avenaged an earlier loss to McGuffey by defeating the Highlanders 63-33 at the Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown.
OLSH (8-2), which lost to McGuffey by five points only seven days earlier in the finals of the Highlanders’ tournament, led 24-19 at halftime but took control of the game in the third quarter with a 21-3 scoring margin.
Jacqueline Mathews scored 13 points for OLSH.
Sammie Weiss was the majority of the offense for McGuffey (8-2) as she scored 19 points. The loss ended the Highlanders’ five-game winning streak.
Weir 48, Avella 28: Raegan Stead scored a game-high 26 points to lead Weir (W.Va.) past Avella, 48-28, at the Mahoney Classic.
Though Stead was the Red Raiders’ lone double-digit scorer, Bailey Stead added eight points. Avella (1-8) trailed by just two points at the end of the first quarter before Weir (2-7) scored 21 points in the second to pull away.
Grace Lengauer scored 11 points for the Eagles.
