Sanders scores 18 to lift McGuffey over C-H
McGuffey played shutdown defense in the fourth quarter Saturday to secure a 55-46 victory over Chartiers-Houston at the Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown.
The Highlanders (6-4) had two double-digit scorers in Shaun Sanders (18 points) and Zach Maxwell (13). Maxwell also had 10 rebounds. The scored was tied 40-40 at the end of the third quarter and McGuffey outscored the Bucs, 15-6, over the final eight minutes to secure its fourth win in five games.
Alec Ferrari had 19 points for Chartiers-Houston (5-6).
Burgettstown 70, Weir 66: Hunter Lecker scored a game-high 30 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining, to lift Burgettstown over Weir (W.Va.), 70-66, at the Mahoney Classic.
Lecker finished 10-for-10 from the free-throw line and Dylan Dhans chipped in 17 points for the Blue Devils (5-6). Weir held the lead until Lecker’s three-pointer and Burgettstown made three of four free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Chris Wood had 20 points for Weir.
Canon-McMillan 56, Hopewell 32: Alex Hammers and Britton Beachy combined for 27 points to lead Canon-McMillan past Hopewell, 56-32, at the Mahoney Classic.
Beachy had a game-high 14 points, including two three-pointers, and Hammers added 13 for the Big Macs (6-4). Canon-McMillan led 31-13 at halftime.
Mirko Loncar scored 12 points for Hopewell (3-7).
Laurel 80, Washington 69: Mason Mraz paced Laurel with 36 points as the Spartans held off a late rally to defeat Washington, 80-69, at the Mahoney Classic.
Mraz made four three-pointers and Scott Siddall added 20 points for Laurel (7-3), which scored 51 points in the first half. Wash High (4-6) trailed by 17 points at the end of the third quarter, but responded with 23 points over the final eight minutes.
The Prexies had three double-digit scorers: Matt Popeck (20 points), Nate Swart (18) and Jonathan Spina (13).
Waynesburg 65, Mapletown 23: Waynesburg held Mapletown to only one point in the first and fourth quarters in route to a 65-23 win in a non-section game.
Dom Sarra led the Raiders with 15 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Jason Zeleny chipped in 11 points and Mitch Warmen had 13. Waynesburg (6-4) held the Maples to just six second-half points.
Mapletown (0-10) was led by Matt Hein, who scored 17 points.
New Castle 77, Monessen 29: New Castle scored 50 first-half points and held Monessen to 13 points in the second half to defeat the Greyhounds, 77-29, in a non-section game.
Robert Natale led the Red Hurricane with 13 points. Marquel Hooker chipped in 12 and Demarcus Blanchard had 11. New Castle (9-1) led 50-16 at halftime and did not allow Monessen to score more than nine points in a quarter.
Justice Rice had 10 points for the Greyhounds (5-5).
