Cal U. men continue strong play on road; women upset, 68-56

The California University men’s basketballl team spent much of Sunday afternoon at the free-throw line and it paid off with a 75-68 victory over host Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover game.

The win was the fifth in a row in conference play for Cal (6-3, 10-4) and improved the Vulcans’ record in road games to 5-1.

California made 30 of 45 free throws, including 22 of 33 during the second half. The Vulcans did not make a field goal in the final three minutes but converted 11 free throws during that period.

Junior guard Khalil Jabbie led four Cal players in double figures with 16 points. He made nine of 12 free throws. Richard Smith scored 15 points, Daniel Sapp had 12 and Jake Jacubec 10. Sapp made 10 of 11 free throws and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, all in only 19 minutes of playing time.

Bloomsburg (2-6, 6-6) scored the first nine points of the second half and opened several five-point leads early in the half, the last at 46-41. California then took the lead for good with an 11-0 run that put the Vulcans ahead 52-46. Josh Dombrosky scored five of his six points during the pivotal stretch.

Cal led 64-56 after a layup by Jacubec with 3:04 remaining and the Vulcans protected their advantage from the free-throw line.

Alssene Saintilus scored a game-high 20 points off the bench for Bloomsburg. John Riles had 13 for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg 68, California 56: Facing a nationally ranked opponent for the third time this season, No. 23 California suffered a 68-56 loss at No. 17 Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover game on the Huskies’ home court.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak by Cal (8-1, 11-2) and dealt the Vulcans their first conference loss. Bloomsburg improves to 7-1 in the conference and 9-2 overall.

California sophomore guard Miki Glenn led all players with 22 points, including 15 in the first half, but it was otherwise a rough offensive day for the Vulcans. Kaitlynn Fratz finished with 13 points on 5-for-14 shooting and freshman Seairra Barrett came off the bench to score 10 points. Senior Emma Mahady, who averages 15 points per game, was held scoreless for the first time since her sophomore season, going 0-for-11 from the field.

Bloomsburg opened the game on a 13-5 run and held Cal scoreless for more than five minutes before the Vulcans strung together 13 unanswered points to take a 19-13 lead on a jumper by Glenn with 6:31 left in the half. The teams traded points until Bloomsburg closed the half on a 14-5 run to take a 31-29 lead into the break.

Bloomsburg mounted a 9-0 run over three minutes early in the second half to take a 40-31 lead, Cal, however, chipped away at the deficit and closed to within 49-47 with 9:44 left after a three-pointer by Fratz. The Huskies, however, scored 12 of the next 15 points as the Vulcans made only one of 12 during an eight-minute stretch.

Cal was held to a season-low .339 field-goal percentage and made just eight of 15 free throws.

Adreana Sadowski led four Bloomsburg players in double figures and had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jocelyn Ford and Camden Boehner each scored 13 points.
