Trinity at home with win over Quaker Valley
It took more than a month, but Trinity High School’s girls basketball team finally played its first home game of the season Monday night.
“We didn’t know what it was like to put on home uniforms,” joked Trinity coach Bob Miles.
The Hillers didn’t forget how to make free throws in their home gymnasium.
Trinity made 22 of 29 free throws, including 15 of 17 in the fourth quarter, to defeat Quaker Valley 56-35 in Section 5-AAA.
The win keeps Trinity (3-1, 8-1) in second place behind section leader Chartiers Valley.
Trinity led 35-23 after three quarters, then used some torrid free-throw shooting by Rachel Phillis and Sierra Kotchman to increase the advantage. Phillis was 7-for-7 at the line in the fourth quarter en route to a 12-point game. Kotchman also finished with 12 points.
“We tell our players that that free-throw shooting and rebounding wins games,” Miles said. “And we also held Quaker Valley to only 35 points.”
Alayna Cappelli also finished with double figures with 10 points for the Hillers.
Alana Davidson scored a game-high 14 points for Quaker Valley (2-3, 5-6).
Charleroi 48, Washington 41:Charleroi pulled away over the final two minutes and defeated visiting Washington 48-41, dealing the Prexies their first loss in Section 4-AA.
It was a three-point game with two minutes remaining but Charleroi (4-1, 8-3) used a strong finish to sanap a two-game losing streak and move a half-game ahead of the Prexies (3-1, 6-5) and Beth-Center atop the section standings. Freshman Maria Claybaugh led Charleroi with 11 points and freshman Sierra Short contributed 10.
Washington, which led 20-17 at halftime, received a game-high 14 points from Mikala Maltony.
Mt. Lebanon 64, Canon-McMillan 44: Three underclassmen lifted Mt. Lebanon to a 64-44 victory over Canon-McMillan in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Sophomore Kate Sramac scored a game-high 17 points, freshman Alyssa Hyland chipped in 13 and sophomore McKenzie Bushee added 10 for Mt. Lebanon, which outscored the Big Macs, 17-5, in the second quarter.
The rough eight-minute stretch had Canon-McMillan (3-2, 8-3) trailing by 12 at halftime. The Big Macs and Blue Devils (5-0, 8-2) both scored 16 in the third quarter before C-M was outscored 21-13 in the final eight minutes.
Danielle Parker had 18 points for the Big Macs.
Fort Cherry 57, Mapletown 22: Sophomores Hannah Greene and Shannon Relihan combined for 33 points and Fort Cherry held host Mapletown to five first-half points as the Rangers rolled to a 57-22 victory in Section 3-A.
Greene scored 21 points and Relihan contributed 12 for Fort Cherry (3-2, 3-7), which led 20-3 after one quarter. Tina Bellhy also reached double figures for the Rangers with 11 points.
Brooke Duranko scored a team-high 10 points for Mapletown (2-3, 3-7).
Monessen 34, Avella 27: Teraee Bradford scored a game-high 16 points and Monessen used a big third quarter to rally and defeat visiting Avella 34-27 in Section 3-A.
Monessen (3-2, 5-6) trailed 11-4 after one quarter and 15-11 at halftime, but the Greyhounds outscored Avella 17-3 in the third quarter. Bradford, who was 10-for-16 at the free-throw line in the game, went 7-for-9 in the third quarter and scored 11 points.
Grace Lengauer led Avella (0-5, 1-9) with eight points. Cara Grogan grabbed 10 rebounds for Monessen.
Chartiers-Houston 56, Wilkinsburg 13: Alexa Williamson had 19 points as Chartiers-Houston overwhelmed Wilkinsburg, 56-13, in a Section 3-AA game.
Jalynn Myers added 14 points for the Bucs (3-1, 8-3), who led 28-2 after one quarter.
Wilkinsburg falls to 0-5, 1-12.
Geibel Catholic 50, West Greene 18: Geibel Catholic overcame a slow start by outscoring West Greene 35-5 in the second and third quarters en route to a 50-18 Section 3-A win over the Pioneers.
Keyonaa McCrae had 13 points for the Gators (3-2, 5-3), who led 6-4 after one quarter.
Sarah Courtwright and Emily Tedrow had six points each for West Greene (0-5, 0-12).
South Fayette 70, Montour 17: Carlee Kilgus’ 16 points powered South Fayette to a 70-17 Section 5-AAA win over Montour.
Emily Anderson added 15 and Sam Kosmacki 14 for the Lions (2-2, 7-3) who pulled away with a 24-5 run in the second quarter.
Amelia Esposito led Mountour (1-3, 4-5) with six points.
Burgettstown 52, Steel Valley 46: Junior forward Katie Tarr scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Burgettstown overcame a 25-20 halftime deficit to defeat Steel Valley in Section 3-AA.
The Blue Devils (2-2, 7-4) pulled ahead 38-35 after three quarters and put the game away late, making 15 of 22 free throws.
Taylee Labishak led Steel Valley (1-4, 1-9) with 14 points.
Frazier 68, Waynesburg 38: Hannah Kline scored 19 points to lead Frazier to a 68-38 Section 4-AA win over Waynesburg.
Hannah Fell added 13 points, while Emily Marshall chipped in 10 for Frazier (3-1, 4-4).
Kirsten Garber led Waynesburg (0-5, 2-8) with 19 points, while Celine Monica had 14 in the losing effort.
Carrick 84, Bentworth 26: Hot-shooting Carrick made eight three-pointers and scored 53 first-half points en route to an 84-27 victory over visiting Bentworth.
Tyler Quenten led Carrick (7-2) with 13 points. The Raiders led 53-17 at halftime.
Angelo Rios-Lopez paced Bentworth (3-7) with nine points.
Western Beaver 74, Avella 60: Zach McComas had 23 points as Western Beaver defeated Avella, 74-60, in a non-section high school boys basketball game.
Cody Acon added 22 points and John Petrosky had 19 for Western Beaver (3-7), which jumped out to a 35-21 lead and made that advantage hold up.
Cody Dobbins scored 22 for Avella (1-10), which also got 17 points from C.J. Norman and 11 from Keith Painter.
