Duquesne hangs on to beat St. Joseph’s

PITTSBURGH – Derrick Colter scored 22 points and Duquesne held on to beat St. Joseph’s 71-68 on Wednesday night, defeating the Hawks for the first time in their last five meetings.

Colter and Jeremiah Jones hit 3-pointers to give the Dukes’ their biggest lead at 69-56 with 2:55 left. The Hawks rallied with a 9-0 run to get within four with 56 seconds remaining. After another basket by Coulter, DeAndre’ Bembry hit a 3-pointer for St. Joseph’s. The Hawks got the ball back with a half-minute left but didn’t score again.

Dominique McKoy added 13 points for Duquesne (6-7, 1-1 Atlantic-10 Conference) Colter and Micah Mason came in as the nation’s second-best 3-point-shooting backcourt at 47.7 percent and bettered that Wednesday night, making 7 of 13.

Saint Joseph’s (6-7, 0-2) was led by 18 points from Bembry and 15 from Aaron Brown, but lost its third straight.
