Three-pointers help spark WHS over Chartiers-Houston

Matt and Anthony Popeck combined for eight three-point field goals and 24 points Wednesday night to lift Washington over Chartiers-Houston, 65-39, in a Section 3-AA game.

Matt had 12 points and Anthony chipped in 12 for the Prexies (3-2, 5-6), who led 35-19 at halftime. Wash High made seven three-pointers in the first half and dominated in the second half, outscoring the Bucs, 21-4, in the fourth quarter. DeQuay Isbell and Nate Swart both had 13 points for the Prexies.

Alec Ferrari finished with 14 points for Chartiers-Houston (1-4, 5-7).

Waynesburg 66, Frazier 55:

Mitch Warmen and Dom Sarra combined for 39 points to lead Waynesburg past Frazier, 66-55, in a Section 4-AA game.

Sarra scored a game-high 20 points, while grabbing 15 rebounds and had seven assists. Warmen had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Raiders (3-2, 7-4). Waynesburg trailed by two points at halftime before grabbing in the lead in the third quarter and held on with strong shootin from the free throw line, making 22 of 33 attempts.

Alvin Ross had 17 points for the Commodores (2-2, 5-5).

Monessen 78, Clairton 51: Monessen rode a strong first half to a 78-51 victory over rival Clairton in a non-section game.

The Greyhounds (6-5) scored 45 points in the first 16 minutes before the Bears began to utilitze 6-5 forward Aaron Matthews in the third quarter. Matthews scored the majority of his team-high 17 points in the period, but Monessen held off Clairton (2-5) in the fourth to secure the victory.

Jaden Altomore had 26 points for Monessen and Lavalle Rush finished with 19.

Carmichaels 55, Mapletown 36: Four players reached double figures and Carmichaels played strong defensively to secure a 55-36 victory over Mapletown in a non-section game.

Jacob Kinsell (15 points), Jacob Wamsley (12), Liam Shea (11) and Mike Mundell (10) reached double figures for the Mikes (3-7). Carmichaels jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter and held off a Maples rally in the third to win their second consecutive game of the season.

Ben Boone had 14 points for Mapletown (0-11).

South Park 75, McGuffey 36: South Park opened the game with one of those quarters in which everything goes your way and it sent the Eagles to a 75-36 victory over McGuffey in Section 5-AAA.

South Park (3-2, 8-5), which had lost four of its last five games, outscored McGuffey 32-4 in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

Justin Gorny, a 6-6 senior, led South Park with 22 points and Joey Torris had 10.

Shaun Sanders had a big scoring game for McGuffey (2-2, 6-5) with 17 points.

Girls result

Ringgold 59, Charleroi 43: Visiting Ringgold rode a huge first quarter to a 59-43 victory over Charleroi in a non-section game.

Ringgold (6-6) raced to a 12-2 lead after the first quarter, though the Rams had to fight off Charerloi (8-4), which pulled to within 25-19 at halftime.

The Rams’ Bailey Cooper and Marlena Schmidt combined for 43 points. Cooper scored a game-high 23 points and Schmidt, a West Virginia recruit, tallied 20 points for Ringgold, which made 14 more field goals than the Cougars.

Sierra Short led Charleroi with 11 points and Adrianna Gottheld followed with 11.
