Jackets finish strong

2 min read

NEW WILMINGTON – The Waynesburg University men’s basketball team overcame a miserable start Monday night and rebounded for a 70-63 victory over Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

The win moves Waynesburg’s record to 4-2 in the conference and above .500 overall at 8-7. The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their last nine.

Jacob Fleegle and Jason Propst each scored 15 points for Waynesburg, which overcame a 16-point, 15-rebound performance by Westminster’s Deontay Scott.

After scoring 96 points in a home win Saturday over Bethany, Waynesburg suffered through a cold-shooting first half against Westminster. The Yellow Jackets made only four of their first 24 shots – missing 12 in a row at one stretch – fell behind by eight points and shot only 28 percent in the first half. Waynesburg, however, put together a late offensive flurry over the final three minutes of the half to grab a 27-26 lead at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets used a 7-0 run, which include a three-pointer by Fleegle, to build a 59-49 lead with four minutes remaining. Though they struggled from the field, Waynesburg protected its lead by making 20 of 26 free throws.

Kenny Klase and B.J. Durham each scored 10 points for Waynesburg, which committed only eight turnovers.

Westminster (0-5, 3-11) received 14 points from Charles Wallander.

Waynesburg hosts Thiel (4-1, 7-6) Wednesday night in a key PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
