McGuffey’s Weiss in 2,000-point club

McGuffey senior forward Sammie Weiss became the 38th girls basketball player in WPIAL history with 2,000 career points as the Highlanders avenged an earlier loss to Quaker Valley by rolling over the host Quakers, 74-40, Thursday night in Section 5-AAA.

Weiss scored a game-high 26 points and increased her career point total to 2,011. She scored her 2,000th point during the third quarter.

McGuffey (5-2, 11-3), which has won three in a row, made 10 three-point field goals and raced to a 37-18 halftime lead over QV, which won by two points early in the season in Claysville.

McGuffey’s Carae Wagner scored 17 points and Rachel Czulewicz had 15 with each player making a trio of three-pointers. Katie Demi also scored in double figures with 11 points.

Karen Pugh paced QV (3-4, 7-7) with 14 points and Alana Davidson had 13.

Washington 39, Waynesburg 26: Tajah Gordon had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds as Washington remained undefeated at home with a 39-26 victory over Waynesburg.

The win, combined with Beth-Center’s victory over Charleroi, moves the Prexies (6-1, 9-5) into sole possession of first place in Section 4-AA and one game ahead of both the Bulldogs and Cougars.

Wash High led by only 25-23 after three quarters but outscored the Raiders 14-3 over the final eight minutes. Gordon scored six of her points in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Taylor Ellis had nine points and Mikala Maltony grabbed 11 rebounds for the Prexies, who have won three in a row.

Waynesburg (0-7, 2-10) had only three players score but Kirsten Garber tossed in a game-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds.

Trinity 52, Keystone Oaks 34:

Alayna Cappelli led a balanced scoring attack from Trinity with 13 points and the Hillers allowed only nine field goals in a 52-34 victory over visiting Keystone Oaks in Section 5-AAA.

Trinity (5-2, 11-2) outscored the Golden Eagles in every quarter and got to the free-throw line 34 times. The Hillers had four players score at least eight points. In addition to Cappelli’s 13 points, Mary Dunn had 10, Sierra Kotchman scored nine and Rachel Phillis had eight.

Haley Johnson and Maryah Agurs each scored nine points for KO (0-7, 1-13).

Avella 41, Mapletown 40: Sophomore Grace Lengauer scored a game-high 16 points and led a fourth-quarter comeback by visiting Avella as the Eagles edged Mapletown 41-40 in Section 3-A.

The win moved Avella’s record to 2-6 in the section and 3-11 overall, but the Eagles have won two of their last three games. Mapletown also is 2-6, 3-11.

The game was tied 11-11 at halftime, but Mapletown pulled out to a 31-23 lead after three quarters. Avella, however, won the fourth quarter by an 18-9 margin.

Mapletown had a chance to win the game with two-tenths of a second remaining. Trailing 41-39, a Maples player missed the front end of a two-shot foul before making the second. Mapletown was only 11 of 24 at the free-throw line.

Lauren Sanetrik led the Maples with nine points.

California 59, Geibel 26: California remained in first place in Section 3-A with a 59-26 thumping of visiting Geibel Catholic.

California (8-0, 15-1) won its 15th in a row, racing to a 27-10 halftime lead and making seven three-point field goals in the game.

Bailey Vig led California with 16 points that included two three-pointers. Kylie Huffman had 14 points with three threes and Lyndsey Huhn contributed 13 points.

Chartiers-Houston 52, Steel Valley 37: Jalynn Myers’ 23 points helped Chartiers-Houston to a 52-37 Section 3-AA win over Steel Valley.

Jules Vulcano added 15 points for the Bucs (5-2, 10-4), who were playing their second consecutive game without injured leading scorer Alexa Williamson.

Cayley Labishak paced Steel Valley (1-6, 1-13) with 17 points.

Bishop Canevin 68, Burgettstown 32: Karen Joyce had 20 points as Bishop Canevin jumped out to a 45-18 halftime lead en route to a 68-32 Section 3-AA win over Burgettstown.

Gina Vallecorsa added 19 points for the Crusaders (6-1, 9-5).

Katie Tarr led Burgettstown (2-5, 8-7) with 16 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 45, Monessen 11: Ally Bogden and Erin Confortini scored 10 points each as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Monessen, 45-11, in a Section 3-A game.

The Rockets (7-1, 13-1) led 20-4 at the half and 34-5 through three quarters.

Monessen falls to 4-4, 6-8.

Fort Cherry 43, West Greene 14: Hannah Greene’s 17 points led Fort Cherry to a 43-14 Section 3-A win over West Greene.

Tina Bellhy added 12 points for the Rangers (5-3, 5-8), which led 24-8 at the half.

Marissa Rode led West Greene (0-8, 0-16) with six points.

Boys results

Mapletown 42, Avella 39: Ben Boone scored 19 points as Mapletown rallied to beat Avella, 42-39, for its first win of the season in Section 3-A.

Jake Lawson added 17 points for the Maples (1-5, 1-13), who trailed 29-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Cody Dobbin scored 17 points for Avella (1-6, 1-14), which also got 10 points from C.J. Norman.

Waynesburg 51, Carmichaels 35: Dom Sarra had 20 points and nine rebounds Tuesday night to lead Waynesburg to a 51-35 Section 4-AA win over Carmichaels.

Jason Veleny added 14 points and Mitch Warmen had 10 rebounds for the Raiders (4-2, 9-4), who took control of the game with a 26-4 run in the second quarter.

Nick Mundell led the Mikes (0-5, 3-10) with eight points.
