Wild Things sign 2 first basemen
The Wild Things announced Thursday the signing of two first basemen, Joey Miller and Tyler Peterson.
Miller (6-4, 225) was named the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year while at Concord University in West Virginia last spring after hitting .390 and leading the league in home runs (13), doubles (21), RBI (71) and slugging percentage (.724). He played in the independent Pecos League last summer with the Roswell Invaders. In 33 games, Miller batted .357 with three home runs and 18 RBI.
The right-handed hitting Miller is a native of Hagerstown, Md.
Peterson (6-4, 200) was one of the top hitters in NCAA Division III the last two years at St. Thomas (Minn.). A consensus All-American and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Peterson missed the final nine games of his college career after suffering a lacerated spleen during a collision as he made a diving catch. He still led the conference in batting average (.471), home runs (8), slugging percentage (.794) and fewest strikeouts with only four in 152 plate appearances. A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Peterson signed last summer with the St. Paul Saints of the independent American Association and played in 12 games, batting .229.
Washington opens its 14th Frontier League season May 15 at home against the two-time defending Frontier League champion Schaumburg Boomers.
