Waynesburg, Canon-McMillan gain key wins

Waynesburg jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter against Brownsville and held on for a 77-72 victory over the visiting Falcons Friday night in a key Section 4-AA boys basketball game.

Dom Sarra scored 29 points, including making 15 of 25 free throws, for the Raiders (5-2, 10-4), who shot 44 free throws compared to 10 for Brownsville (5-2, 9-5).

Mitch Warmen added 20 points for the Raiders, while Jason Zeleny had 13.

Travis Bevard led the Falcons with 21 points, while Noah Brown added 17.

Canon-McMillan 35, Upper St. Clair 31: Sophomore Britton Beachy scored six of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter and sophomore R.J. Bell sank two free throws with five seconds remaining as the Big Macs defeated Upper St. Clair, 35-31, in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Canon-McMillan (2-4, 7-7) trailed by five points at the end of the third quarter befor making 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth, including Bell’s two shots in the final seconds at Upper St. Clair High School. Senior Sam Bohn added 11 points for the Big Macs, who made 14 of 17 free throws.

Andrew Wheeler scored 10 points for the Panthers (4-3, 10-4). Upper St. Clair will get a rematch tonight when it travels to Canon-McMillan.

Charleroi 51, Beth-Center 33: John Arnold scored 14 points to lead Charleroi to a 51-33 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 4-AA game.

Sam Miceli added 13 points for the Cougars (6-1, 8-6), who moved into first place in the section with Brownsville’s loss at Waynesburg.

Bradey McDonnell led the Bulldogs (1-5, 6-7) with 14 points.

Bishop Canevin 58, Chartiers-Houston 45: John Weldon’s 20 points helped Bishop Canevin hold off Chartiers-Houston, 58-45, in a Section 3-AA game.

Justin Dix added 15 points, while Mitch King had 11 for the Crusaders (7-1, 12-3).

Alec Ferrari scored 16 points and Cameron Hanley added 10 for Chartiers-Houston (3-5, 8-8).

Baldwin 59, Peters Township 50: Doug Altavilla scored 21 points as Baldwin jumped out to a 33-22 halftime lead and held off Peters Township, 59-50, in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Kevin Taylor scored 14 points and Anthony Starzynski had 13 for Baldwin (2-6, 3-12).

Tim Swoope led Peters Township (2-5, 6-7) with 10 points.

West Allegheny 42, McGuffey 30: West Allegheny limited McGuffey to eight points in the first half en route to a 42-30 Section 4-AAA win.

Sean Orsini and Andrew Koester scored 12 points each to pace the Indians (4-3, 6-7).

Shaun Sanders scored 11 points to lead McGuffey (2-5, 6-9).

Trinity 45, Keystone Oaks 32: Trinity outscored Keystone Oaks 29-9 over the second and third quarters to stay in playoff contention in Section 4-AAA with a 45-32 victory.

Adam Raggi and Ben Phillis scored 10 points each for the Hillers (3-4, 6-8), who were outscored 13-3 in the fourth quarter.

Kobe Phillippi had 14 points for Keystone Oaks (0-7, 2-13).

Thomas Jefferson 61, Ringgold 39: Thomas Jefferson used some long-range shooting to knock off host Ringgold 61-39 in Section 4-AAA.

TJ’s win avenged the Jaguars’ 20-point loss at home to Ringgold early in the season.

The Jaguars (3-5, 5-10) made seven three-pointers and had two big quarters – the second and fourth – when the outscored the Rams 36-15. Frank Langan led TJ with 20 points and Cam Sarber followed with 14. T.J. Mason also reached double figures with 10 points.

Ringgold (2-6, 5-9), which has dropped four in a row, received 14 points from Ringgold.

California 51, Jefferson-Morgan 34: Tray Matthews and Kass Taylor combined for 21 points and California took advantage of a big third quarter to defeat host Jefferson-Morgan 51-34 in Section 3-A.

Jefferson-Morgan (3-4, 8-6) held a one-point lead at halftime, but California (5-1, 8-4) outscored the Rockets by a 17-3 margin in the third quarter to forge a 40-27 lead.

Matthew led the Trojans with 11 points and Taylor followed with 10.

Jefferson-Morgan, which had to play without leading scorer Rece Henneman, had to rely on a balanced attack and received 10 points from Dylan Davis.

West Greene 42, Geibel Catholic 39: Senior Bray Jackson had a big fourth quarter to help West Greene hold off visiting Geibel Catholic 42-39 in Section 3-A.

The win enhanced the playoff hopes for West Greene (3-4, 5-10) and dropped Geibel (4-4, 7-8) to the .500 mark in the section.

West Greene led for much of the game before James Ewing scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter. Ewing, who was 9-for-9 at the free-throw line in the quarter, helped the Gators grab a late lead, but Jackson put West Greene back in front with a three-pointer with 1:30 remaining. Jackson, who scored 10 fourth-quarter points, helped the Pioneers protect the advantage by making four free throws down the stretch.

Sophomore Kolton Rush scored a game-high 18 points to lead West Greene, and point guard Kyle Shough came through with 13 rebounds.

Frazier 48, Bentworth 41: Alvin Ross had 17 points to lead Frazier to a 48-41 win over Bentworth in a Section 4-AA game.

Mark Dillon added 11 points for the Commodores (4-3, 7-7), which led just 22-21 at the half.

Zach Walker and Angelo Rios-Lopez had 10 points each for the Bearcats (2-5, 6-9).

Burgettstown 47, Carlynton 25: Burgettstown made six three-pointers and senior forward Jeremy John scored a team-high 12 points as the Blue Devils defeated Carlynton, 47-25, in Section 3-AA.

Burgettstown (3-5, 6-9) trailed by three points at the end of the first quarter but took a two-point lead at the half, then outscored he Cougars, 30-10, in the second half.

Hunter Lecker had seven points and 14 rebounds for Burgettstown, and John grabbed eight rebounds.

Tarik Isak had 13 points for Carlynton (1-7, 5-10).

Girls results

Carmichaels 43, Monessen 36: Guard Caroline Cree had one of her best games of the season, scoring 28 points and making four three-pointers, in powering Carmichaels to a 43-36 victory over visiting Monessen in a non-section game.

Cree helped Carmichaels (7-9) bolt to a 16-5 lead after one quarter and the Mikes protected the lead the rest of the way.

Cara Grogan scored 13 points and Natalia Holmes had for Monessen (6-9), which made only six of 19 free throws.

Avella 34, Clairton 27: Joelle Gossett had 10 points as Avella held off Clairton, 34-27, in a non-section game.

Grace Lengauer added nine points for the Eagles (4-11), who led 25-16 entering the fourth quarter.

Serenity Simmons and Dayshawna Stewart scored 10 points each for Clairton (2-13).
