Dunlap scores 1,000th point, leads W&J past Bethany

Senior center Valerie Dunlap scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, as Washington & Jefferson defeated Bethany, 90-72, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

The double-double was the 31st for Dunlap at W&J.

Taylor Cortazzo had a game-high 24 points for the Presidents (5-3, 11-4), who had five players reach double digits in scoring. Alexa DelGreco added 13 points, Amirah Moore 12 and Erin Lavery 11, respectively. Moore also had four steals.

Hayley Holenka led Bethany (3-5, 7-8) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Sami Schott had 12 points and nine rebounds.

California 73, Seton Hill 65: California overcame a 35-30 halftime deficit en route to a 73-64 PSAC victory at Seton Hill.

Miki Glenn scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half for the 22nd-ranked Vulcans (11-1, 14-2). Kaitlynn Fratz added 19 points, Seairra Barrett 13 and Emma Mahady 10 in the winning effort.

Chelsea Apke, a W&J graduate who is now playing at Seton Hill as a graduate student, had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Griffins (4-8, 7-10). Kelly Brennan had 15 points and Meghan Mastroianni added 10 for Seton Hill.

Chatham 65, Waynesburg 59: Megan Sieg scored 15 points as Chatham edged Waynesburg, 64-59, in a PAC game.

Waynesburg lost despite holding a 48-37 rebounding advantage and limiting Chatham to 30 percent shooting. The Yellow Jackets shot 32 percent but made just 12 of 21 free throws, compared to 22 of 36 for the Cougars.

Anna Shashura, a junior from Beth-Center High School, added 10 points for the Cougars (2-6, 5-10), while Jesse Hinkle had 11 rebounds.

Rebecca Kerr led Waynesburg (4-4, 7-8) with 12 points, while Haley Delaney pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.

Men’s basketball

Bethany 78, Washington & Jefferson 69: Delonte’ Joyce had 32 points and six steals as Bethany defeated Washington & Jefferson, 78-69, in a PAC game.

Bethany (3-4, 8-8) limited W&J (0-7, 1-15) to just eight field goals in the first half while building a 36-27 lead.

Alan Harper scored 15 points and Darrian Bruster scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds for the Bison.

Mitch Locher had 16, Mike Resnik 14 and Brian Lindquist 11 points for W&J.

Seton Hill 63, California 59: David Windsor had 27 points and Kameron Taylor scored 22 as Seton Hill held off California, 63-59, in a PSAC men’s basketball game.

Windsor and Taylor made all nine of their free throws, including several in the closing minutes for the Griffins (5-7, 6-10), who trailed 29-28 at the half.

Richard Smith scored 12 points and Khalil Jabbie had 11 for the Vulcans (7-5, 11-6), who attempted just seven free throws in the game.
