Defense keeps Wash High in 1st place

Washington held Carmichaels to just six second-half points and cruised to a 50-36 victory in a Section 4-AA game. The Prexies kept their one-game lead over Frazier for first place.

Nicole Hoffman had 11 points for the Prexies (7-1, 10-4), who outscored the Mikes (1-6, 7-10) 20-6 over the second half. Tajah Gordon had eight points and 12 rebounds, Mikala Maltony nine points and eight rebounds and Emily Beck eight points and eight rebounds.

Caroline Cree scored a game-high 22 points for the Mikes.

Frazier 39, Charleroi 37: Jovanna Isaac scored the game-winning basket with 15 seconds remaining and Frazier moved into second place in Section 4-AA with a 39-37 victory over host Charleroi.

Isaac’s game-winning basket – only her second field goals of the game – moved Frazier to 6-2 in the section and 8-5 overall. The Commodores trail first-place Washington by one game. Charleroi fell to 5-3, 9-7. The Cougars have lost three in a row.

Cassidy Guiser scored 11 points to lead Frazier, which overcame a 19-15 halftime deficit.

Freshman Kaitlyn Riley scored a game-high 19 points for Charleroi.

McGuffey 56, Montour 35: Sammie Weiss scored a game-high 28 points to propel McGuffey to a 56-35 victory over Montour in a Section 5-AAA game.

C.C. Wagner scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for the Highlanders (6-2, 12-3). Rachel Czulewicz had six assists.

Jane Scheicher led Montour (1-6, 6-10) with 12 points.

Canon-McMillan 55, West Allegheny 38: A balanced scoring attack powered Canon-McMillan to a 55-38 victory over West Allegheny in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Cheyenne Trest and Isabelle Allen each scored 16 points for the Big Macs (4-5, 9-6). Danielle Parker added 14 points.

Brianna Turner scored a game-high 18 points for West Allegheny (1-8, 6-10).

Mapletown 28, West Greene 22: Mapletown rallied in the second half to grab a 28-22 victory over West Greene in a Section 3-A game.

Rachel Buchtan scored 10 points for the Maples (3-6, 4-11), who trailed 11-10 at halftime.

Marissa Rode led the Pioneers (0-9, 0-17) with nine points. Sarah Courtwright added five.

California 57, Avella 17: Four players scored in double figures to lead California to a 57-17 victory over Avella in a Section 3-A game. It was the 16th straight win for California after a season-opening loss to Mars.

Kylie Huffman and Lyndsey Huhn each tossed in 11 for the first-place Trojans (9-0, 16-1). Jenna Miller and Bailey Vig each chipped in with 10 points.

Grace Lengauer paced Avella (2-7, 3-12) with seven points.

Geibel Catholic 40, Mapletown 39: James Ewing scored 16 points and host Geibel Catholic survived a late charge by Mapletown for a 40-39 victory in Section 3-A.

Holding the 40-39 lead, Geibel (5-3, 8-7) missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left in the game. Mapletown, which made seven three-pointers, then missed a shot from behind the arc but was able to grab the rebound. The Maples then missed a four-footer at the buzzer.

Ben Boone shared game scoring honors with Ewing by scoring 16 points and making three three-pointers. Jake Lawson followed with 12 points for the Maples (1-6, 1-14), which was trying to win its second in a row.

In other games: Thomas Jefferson edged visiting Ringgold 35-32 in a Section 4-AAA girls game. Bethel Park defeated Peters Township 59-51 in a Section 4-AAAA girls game. Burgettstown improved to 3-5 in Section 3-AA and 9-7 overall with a 55-20 win at Wilkinsburg. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
