McGuffey rallies to beat Mt. Pleasant
Sammie Weiss scored 29 points and McGuffey used a second-half comeback and some torrid free-throw shooting to rally and defeat Mt. Pleasant 68-62 in a non-section high school girls basketball game Wednesday night.
The win was the seventh in a row for McGuffey, which improved to 15-3. Mt. Pleasant, which fell to 12-6, made nine three-point field goals.
McGuffey trailed 31-24 at halftime, but the Highlanders rallied in large part because of their free-throw shooting. McGuffey made 25 of 29 foul shots compared to Mt. Pleasant’s 5-for-6. Weiss made 14 of 16 free throws.
Rachel Czulewicz scored 20 points for McGuffey, including 12 in the second half. Katie Demi played a big part in the Highlanders’ comeback by scoring all 10 of her points after halftime.
Alexa Szelong led Mt. Pleasant with 20 points, which included six threes.
Geibel Catholic 42, Mapletown 30: Riley Bocan scored 13 points and helped spark a fourth-quarter comeback as Geibel Catholic rallied for a 42-30 victory over host Mapletown in a Section 3-A game.
Mapletown (3-8, 5-14) led 14-7 after one quarter and 25-22 entering the fourth. Geibel (6-5, 9-6), however, outscored the Maples 20-5 over the final eight minutes. Bocan scored six points during the late charge, and Karly Judy scored all six of her points in the Gators’ big fourth quarter. Grace Nowicki finished with 10 points for Geibel.
Rachel Buchtan led Mapletown with eight points.

Mapletown 50, Carmichaels 42: Matt Hein scored a game-high 17 points and made four of Mapletown’s six three-pointers as the Maples defeated visiting Carmichaels, 50-42, in a non-section game.
Mapletown (2-17) led 14-12 after one quarter and maintained a one possession lead entering the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Mikes 19-14 over the final eight minutes.
Ben Boone followed Hein’s big game with 16 points for the Maples.
Nick Mundell led Carmichaels (5-13) with 13 points and Jacob Kinsell had 12. The Mikes made only 11 of 19 free throws compared to Mapletown’s 6-for-7.
West Greene 64, Bentworth 45: Craig Weaver scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead West Greene to a 64-45 non-section win over Bentworth.
Kolten Rush added 21 points, while Beau Jackson had 13 points and 11 rebounds, for the Pioneers (7-12), who put the game away with a 26-9 run in the third quarter.
Angelo Rios-Lopez had 18 points for Bentworth (6-14).
Clairton 58, Trinity 55: Clairton got a three-point play off a missed shot and putback to edge Trinity, 58-55, in overtime in a non-section game.
Clairton (7-9) led by as many as seven points in overtime over the Hillers (6-11), who tied the game at 55-55 with 15 seconds remaining in the extra period.
Uri Myers had 21 points and Harrison Dreher added 12 for Clairton.
Joey Koroly scored 18 points, Nick Moretti 13 and Adam Raggi and Ben Phillis 10 each for the Hillers.
Aquinas Academy 69, Avella 41: Mike Tappe had 39 points as Aquinas Academy jumped out to a 38-17 halftime lead en route to a 69-44 non-section win over Avella.
Chris Miller chipped in 11 points for Aquinas Academy (2-15).
Cody Dobbin scored 13 points, while Brandon Miller had 11, for Avella (1-19).
