Mercyhurst denies Cal; 27-0 run sparks Waynesburg
Jean Onana came off the bench to score 11 points, including a tiebreaking three-point field goal with 1:18 remaining, as Mercyhurst edged California 58-57 in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday night in Erie.
California, which made only three field goals in the final nine minutes, tied the score at 53-53 when Drew Cook drained a three-pointer with 1:27 remaining. Onana answered with his three-pointer that gave the Lakers the lead for good.
California managed to pull to within one point twice down the stretch, the last time being at 58-57 after a basket by Khalil Jabbie with 12 seconds left. Mercyhurst missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Vulcans the game’s final possession. Jabbie missed a shot but the ball went out of bounds off aMercyhurst player, giving Cal the ball with one seconds to play. The Vuclans, however, turned the ball over on the in-bounds play.
Jabbie led Cal with 13 points.
Waynesburg 81, Westminster 60: D.J. Ritchie came off the bench to lead four Waynesburg players in double figures with 14 points, and the Yellow Jackets used a 27-0 run in the first half to run away from visiting Westminster, 81-60, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Waynesburg (6-4, 10-9) trailed 24-18 in the first half when the 27-0 run, which lasted 6 1/2 minutes, gave the Yellow Jackets a 45-24 lead. Waynesburg led 54-30 at halftime.
Kenny Klase scored all of his 13 points during Waynesburg’s big first half. Thomas Ellis also scored 13 points and Jacon Fleegle contributed 11.
Paul Carswell scored a game-high 20 points for Westminster (2-7, 5-13).
Thiel 71, Wash & Jeff 59: Josh Johnson scored 15 points and Thiel was helped by a big edge on the boards in a 71-59 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game.
Khari Bess scored 14 points and Luke Kochka added 12 for Thiel (7-3, 11-8), which outrebounded W&J 46-36 and collected 14 offensive rebounds.
The loss dropped W&J to 0-10 in the conference and 1-18 overall.
Mike Resnik again led W&J in scoring with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Brian Lindquist made five of six shots and finished with 13 points and Doug Johnson scored 11. Mitch Locher grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Women’s results
California 72, Mercyhurst 46: Senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as California cruised past host Mercyhurst, 72-46, in a PSAC West Division game.
Cal improves to 12-2 in the PSAC and 16-3overall. The Vulcans remain in a tie for second place in the West, one game behind first-place IUP. Mercyhurst is 5-10, 8-13.
Fratz, who set her season high with the 25 points, made nine of 13 shots from the field and hadsix rebounds, leading four Vulcans who scored in double figures. Emma Mahady had 13 points, Irina Kukolj scored 12 and Sierra Barrett came off the bench to contribute 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
Wash & Jeff 66, Thiel 44: Beka Bellhy scored 18 points and Washington & Jefferson pulled away in the second half to defeat host Thiel, 66-44, in a PAC game.
W&J (7-3, 13-4) held a 27-21 lead at halftime but Bellhy and Taylor Cortazzo, who finished with 11 points, helped the Presidents pull away midway through the second half. The Presidents held Thiel (3-7, 4-13) to only 27 percent shooting and Valerie Dunlap dominated on the boards by grabbing 12 rebounds.
Jaclyn Watkins led Thiel with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Waynesburg 73, Westminster 47: Addy Knetzer, a freshman forward from Chartiers-Houston, scored a game-high 19 points and helped Waynesburg finish on a big run as the Yellow Jackets pulled away for a 73-47 victory over visiting Westminster in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (6-5, 9-9) had a double-digit lead at halftime, but Westminster (3-8, 4-14) closed to within six points early in the second half. The Yellow Jackets, however, put together a 26-8 run over a seven-minute stretch late in the game to open a 68-45 lead. Knetzer scored nine points during the run. She made eight of 12 shots on the night.
Rebecca Kerr, with 15 points, was the only other Waynesburg player to score in double figures. Allison Borts led Westminster with 13 points.
