Free throws key to Trinity’s victory
Freshman Joey Koroly scored 18 points and Trinity made 23 of its 31 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat West Allegheny, 72-62, Friday night in a Section 5-AAA game.
Koroly made 10 free throws and was joined in dobule figures by Adam Raggi (15 points), Nick Moretti (12) and Dylan Kern (11).
The Hillers (4-6, 7-11) trailed by six points at the end of the third quarter and took the lead with over three minutes remaining. West Allegheny (5-6, 8-10) began to foul and Trinity responded with a free-throw shooting clinic to snap a three-game losing streak. Ben Phillis scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Tyler Duffett scored 19 points for West Allegheny.
Beth-Center 39, Carmichaels 38: Senior guard Ryan Beyer scored 14 points and spearheaded a second-half comeback by Beth-Center as the Bulldogs edged host Carmichaels 39-38 in Section 4-AA.
The win evened Beth-Center’s overall record at 9-9. The Bulldogs are 2-7 in the section. It was B-C’s second win of the season over Carmichaels with both games on the Mikes’ home court. The Bulldogs edged the Mikes in the championship game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament back in December.
Carmichaels (1-8, 5-14) led 20-14 at halftime, but B-C outscored the Mikes 16-8 in the third quarter to take a two-point lead into the final eight minutes. The Bulldogs broke a tie by making a free throw in the closing seconds before Carmichaels missed a desperation three-pointer as time expired.
Nick Mundell scored a game-high 15 points for Carmichaels, which made only 10 of 21 free throws. Beth-Center made seven of 11 free throws.
Chartiers Valley 86, Peters Township 55: Matty McConell scored 33 points and made four of Chartiers Valley’s 16 three-point field goals in the Colts’ 86-55 victory over visiting Peters Township in Section 4-AAAA.
The win was the 500th in the career of Chartiers Valley head coach and former Waynesburg University standout point guard Tim McConnell.
CV (10-1, 16-2) won its ninth in a row. The Colts scored 50 first-half points and forged a 25-point lead at intermission.
Ross Wilkerson scored 19 points and led CV’s long-range shooters with five three-pointers. Eddie Flohr scored 13 points and Jake Ritson contributed 12.
Tim Swoope had a big game for PT (3-9, 7-11) with 17 points but he was the only Indians player in double figures.
Monessen 75, West Greene 17: Lavalle Rush and Jaden Altomore combined for 37 points to lead Monessen past West Greene, 75-17, in a Section 3-A game.
Rush had a game-high 20 points and Altomore added 17 for the Greyhounds (10-0, 13-6), who have not lost to a Class A opponent this season. Monessen began the game on a 19-4 run before outscoring the Pioneers, 30-3, in the second quarter.
Kolton Rush led West Greene (4-6, 7-13) with eight points.
Mt. Lebanon 56, Canon-McMillan 43: Mt. Lebanon had three players in double figures and used a strong third quarter to defeat Canon-McMillan, 56-43, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
The Blue Devils (10-2, 15-5) were led by Patrick Ehland (16 points), Eddie Jenkins (12) and Mark Lamendola (11). The Big Macs (4-8, 9-11) trailed 22-21 at halftime, but were outscored ,18-7, in the third quarter as Mt. Lebanon pulled away.
Canon-McMillan was led by sophomore Carson Miller, who had a game-high 18 points.
South Park 68, McGuffey 50: McGuffey was within striking distance, but a disappointing fourth quarter cost the Highlanders in a 68-50 loss to South Park in Section 5-AAA.
McGuffey (2-8, 6-12) was led by Zach Maxwell’s 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Damian McCloskey scored a team-high 16 points. The game was tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter before South Park (8-3, 15-6) took a nine-point advantage into the half before holding off a McGuffey rally in the fourth quarter.
Justin Gorny scored a game-high 25 points and Dan Wanker chipped in 20 for the Eagles.
Monessen 75, West Greene 17: Lavalle Rush and Jaden Altomore combined for 37 points to lead Monessen past West Greene, 75-17, in Section 3-A.

Girls results
Jefferson-Morgan 48, Bentworth 45: Ally Bogden led a balanced Jefferson-Morgan attack with 12 points and the visiting Rockets held off upset-minded Bentworth 48-45 in a non-section game.
Jefferson-Morgan (17-2), which suffered its second loss of the season Thursday against California, needed two defensive stops in the closing seconds to avoid a second loss in as many nights. Bentworth (8-11) trailed by 47-45 and had possession of the basketball but committed a turnover that set up a free throw by J-M’s Kayla Yorko. Bentworth then had one final chance to force overtime but again committed a turnover.
Yorko finished with 10 points for J-M, which outscored Bentworth 13-10 in the fourth quarter.
Bentworth’s Reilly Skerbetz led all scorers with 18 points and teammate Heather Chester contributed 13.
Postponements:
Bad weather caused the postponements of multiple local high school basketball games Friday.
In boys basketball, a Section 3-AA game between Chartiers-Houston and Washington will be played today at Wash High with tip-off set for 2:30 p.m. In a corresponding move, the Prexies’ non-section game against South Fayette, which was scheduled for today, will be made up at a date to be determined. Also in Section 3-AA, Seton-LaSalle will travel to Burgettstown today at 2:30 p.m.
Also, Fort Cherry will host Carlynton Monday at 7:30 p.m., California will face Mapletown Monday night in Section 3-A, Geibel Catholic and Jefferson-Morgan has been rescheduled for Wednesday and Waynesburg at Frazier will be played at a date to be determined. Ringgold’s Section 4-AAA game against Belle Vernon will be made up Monday night at BV.
