Matt Peters, a California University graduate, smacked a two-run double in the fourth inning to help the Washington Wild Things stop the Windy City ThunderBolts 3-2 in a Frontier League game Wednesday night.

Sam Mende scored in the sixth inning with two outs. He walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Scott Kalamar.

Reliever Steve Messner wiggled out of a jam in the seventh when Jonathan Garcia was caught in a rundown trying to score from third base on a single by Jacob Tanis.

Ernesto Zaragoza allowed only one unearned run in six innings to pick up the win. Jonathan Kountis picked up his third save.

In other news, the Wild Things placed outfielder C.J. Beatty on the 7-day disabled list and right-handed pitcher Joe Iorio was placed on the 14-day disabled list before Tuesday’s game with Windy City. Beatty is batting .262 in 43 games with 10 doubles, one home run, 17 RBI and 21 runs. Iorio, who allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings last weekend against Joliet, has appeared in 12 games for Washington this season and holds a 5.75 ERA in 20 1/3 innings.

In corresponding moves, the Wild Things signed outfielder Jon Minucci, a 24-year-old right-handed hitter, and right-handed pitcher Jeremy Holcombe. Minucci, who played collegiately at Southern New Hampshire University, was released by Southern Illinois last weekend after batting just .217 in 39 games with 15 RBI and played in 82 games for the Frontier Greys last season.

Holcombe, who Washignton signed during the off-season but released after spring training, pitched collegiately at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. In his college career, Holcombe made 22 starts with a 14-4 record and a 2.67 ERA.
