Wheatcroft steady at John Deere
SILVIS, Ill. – Trinity High School graduate Steve Wheatcroft continued his strong play at TPC Deere Run Saturday by shooting a 1-under-par 70 to enter today’s final round tied for 13th at the John Deere Classic.
Jordan Spieth is leading the field after shooting a 9-under-par 61 – his lowest round on the PGA Tour. Spieth, 21, had six birdies and two double-eagles and leads Danny Lee by two strokes entering the final round.
Wheatcroft, who shot a 5-under 66 Friday and was tied for sixth enter play Saturday, had another strong start with back-to-back birdies to begin play on the front 9. He was tied for the lead with several other golfers until he ran into trouble when he three-putted No. 6 for a bogey and had trouble on the par 3 No. 7 when his tee shot sailed near the green side bunker. Wheatcroft bounced back to par the next eight holes and he birdied the final two.
Wheatcroft finished the day with back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and is seven shots off the lead with a 10-under-par.
Spieth, who will try for his third straight major title next week at the British Open, began the tournament slow Thursday.
