Steelers extend Heyward
The Steelers’ main objective this offseason after signing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a contract extension was doing the same with defensive end Cameron Heyward.
The team accomplished that Thursday, signing the 26-year-old to a six-year deal that will pay him nearly $60 million.
“I love this organization! Very blessed and excited about continuing my career as a Steeler!” Heyward tweeted along with a photo of him signing the deal.
The Steelers picked up the option on Heyward, a first-round draft pick in 2011, guaranteeing him $6.969 million in 2015. He is coming off his best season after recording 53 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 2014.
With the departure of a number of veteran defenders over the past few years, including Troy Polamalu, Brett Keisel and Ike Taylor this offseason, the Steelers are counting on Heyward to have an increased role as a leader.
Heyward, a former Ohio State star and son of former Pitt and NFL running back Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, started 29 games over the past two seasons, recording 12.5 sacks. Craig Heyward died in 2006.
“I grew up admiring the Steelers I bleed black & gold,” Heyward tweeted. “Iron head is looking down with a smile.”
