W&J’s Carr, Waynesburg’s Lohr & Guidi earn All-American status; advance to DIII semifinals
Washington & Jefferson College junior 157-pounder Nick Carr posted two wins Friday to advance to the semifinal round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Carr was not the lone area wrestler to advance. Waynesburg University’s duo of 149-pounder Luke Lohr and 165-pounder Sam Guidi also advanced with a pair of wins Friday.
All three are guaranteed All-America status.
Carr (25-0), a South Fayette High School graduate who was the national runner-up last season at 165 pounds, will face fifth-seeded Steven Dewitt of of Loras (Iowa) Saturday morning for the right to advance to the 157-pound national championship match. The top-seeded Carr opened with a 6-4 overtime decision over unseeded Reed Van Anrooy of Luther in his first match. Carr then picked up a 13-5 major decision over Carl Elmer of St. Olaf.
Lohr, seeded fifth at 149 pounds, defeated Will Keeter of Augusburg, 6-3, in the opening round, then edged fourth-seeded Kenneth Martin of Wartburg, 4-2.
Guidi, a Fort Cherry High School graduate, knocked off No. 3 seed Dylan Foley of Springfield, 3-1.
He followed that up with another 3-1 win, this time over sixth-seeded Nolan Barger or Lycoming.
W&J’s Jacob Spearman fell just one victory of reaching All-America status at 133 pounds. Spearman was pinned (3:56) by fifth-seeded Matthew Grossman of Wilkes in his opening bout, but rallied to notch wins over Brandon Preston (12-2 major decision) and Gabe Foltz of Concordia-Moorhead (11-5).
Spearman then faced Zach Haynes of Delaware Valley in a match later Friday night that would guarantee the winner All-America recognition. Haynes and Spearman battled to a close match throughout before Haynes held on for a 12-7 victory.
