Frank Zebrasky has been suspended as varsity baseball coach at Canon-McMillan High School while the district conducts an investigation into alleged marijuana use by players on a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., last week.

Brandon Dittmar, an assistant under Zebrasky, is running the team during the investigation.

Frank Vulcano, the athletic director at Canon-McMillan, said the district will issue a statement after the investigation is completed. He said he could not comment on the incident.

Zebrasky did not return a phone message seeking comment.

The Big Macs played their Section 5-AAAA opener Monday at home against Mt. Lebanon.

Several sources have told the Observer-Reporter that some players on the Big Macs team face suspension for the incident, which took place March 21 following a game at the Cal Ripken Experience baseball complex in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

None of the players were identified.

If the investigation finds students used illegal drugs, they could be suspended from school for a minimum of 10 days, or be given a number of other sanctions spelled out in the student handbook, including expulsion.

Zebrasky was in his seventh season as head coach at Canon-McMillan after being hired in March 2009 to replace Steve Bucci. Zebrasky compiled a record of 56-57 with back-to-back playoff appearances in 2013 and 2014. Both runs ended in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals after a loss to Hempfield in 2013 and Moon last season.

Zebrasky also was hired in 2010 to coach the Canon-McMillan girls basketball team. He had spent five seasons as Mike Brodnick’s assistant before taking the job.

Canon-McMillan School Board has an agenda meeting April 16 and a regular meeting April 23.
