Baseball: California taken to extra innings, but still wins 1-A title
California clinched the Section 1-A championship Friday, but the Trojans had to play an extra inning to do it.
California scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and defeated Bentworth, 9-5.
The Trojans (9-0, 15-1) overcame deficits of 4-2 in the fourth and 5-3 in the sixth. Cal forced extra innings by scoring runs in the top of the seventh.
Kouden Conte and Casey Zajicek each homered for Cal, and Nate Luketich and Aaron Previsky both doubled. Conte was the winning pitcher, throwing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Ty Mitchell had a double for Bentworth, which made the most of beingheld to four hits.
California will resume a suspended game Monday (4:15 p.m.) at Carmichaels. The Trojans are winning 6-1 in the fifth inning.
• Dom Neff hit a home run and Trinity used a fast start to defeated McGuffey 9-3, in Section 3-AAA.
The win was the third straight for the Hillers (4-6, 5-11), who led 4-0 after two innings.
Zach Cain had a triple, and Nick Herrnberger and Aaron Archer doubled for Trinity. Brandon Tarbuck was the winning pitcher.
Losing pitcher Dan Orr had a double for McGuffey (0-9, 0-12).
• Peyton Russoniello hit a home run and double, and John Medich pitched a four-hitter, as Quaker Valley snapped a two-game losing streak Friday with a 13-1 victory over host Fort Cherry in Section 1-AA.
Adam Pilewicz and Chris Tanabe each had a double and three RBI for the Quakers (10-2, 11-2). Fort Cherry’s record dropped to 4-9, 5-10.
• Joel Rohanna went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lift playoff-bound Waynesburg over Beth-Center, 8-1, in Section 2-AA.
Trey Rohanna earned the victory with three strikeouts and allowed just four hits. He also hit a double and Hunter Robinson hit a triple for the Raiders (9-3, 10-4).
Taylor Zelenick had a double for the Bulldogs (3-8, 4-9).
• Charleroi used a three-run first inning to defeat Washington, 4-3, in a Section 3-AA game at Colt Field Thursday.
Jessie Andrechak earned the victory with a strikeout and Matt Szerszen went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Cougars (4-7, 5-9). Jonathan Spina hit a triple for the Prexies (8-3, 8-4).
