Baseball: Peters sets Cal record, but Vulcans eliminated in tournament
California shortstop Matt Peters broke the school’s all-time hits record and drove in four runs Friday but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Vulcans from being eliminated from the PSAC tournament.
Seton Hill broke a tie with a run in the top of the ninth inning and defeated California, 10-9, at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler.
Cal ends the season with a 25-22 record.
Peters went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored. He finishes his career with 224 hits, eclipsing the previous record of 223 by Sam DiMatteo (2007-10). Peters also ranks fourth in Cal history 130 RBI and sixth with 128 runs. Peters posted the second-highest batting average in school history, hitting .446 this year.
David Marcus hit a home run to tie the Cal single-season record with 15. Jared Grove and Levi Krause also homered for the Vulcans.
Cody Herald, who drove in three runs, hit one of Seton Hill’s three homers. The Griffins (41-10) scored in the ninth when Herald doubled home Logan Urtz.
• Thomas More clinched at least a share of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular-season championship by defeating host Waynesburg 7-2.
The Saints improve to 18-4 in the PA and 27-8 overall. With a win Saturday against the Yellow Jackets or a loss by Thiel against Saint Vincent, Thomas More will clinch the outright title and host next week’s PAC tournament. Waynesburg is 15-7, 17-16-1.
Thomas More led 1-0 before scoring two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth.
Winning pitcher Logan Moore threw eight shutout innings. Waynesburg scored in the ninth on a two-run homer by Ben Miller.
• Ryan Sciullo hit a home run, triple and drove in three runs to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 9-2 win at Geneva in a PAC game.
Winning pitcher Riley Groves scattered eight hits to improve his record to 8-1.
The Presidents are 14-8 in the PAC and 23-14 overall.
