Baseball: Perfect 10 as California finishes unbeaten in 1-A
California completed an undefeated Section 1-A season Monday by defeating host Carmichaels 13-1 in the completion of suspended game.
California (10-0, 16-1) has won 11 in a row.
Nate Luketich had a double and drove in four runs, and Aaron Previsky hit a home run and also had four RBI to lead the Trojans at the plate. Previsky has 47 RBI on the season.
Chris Swartz had a double and Johnny DeFranco scored three runs. Cal broke the school’s single-season record for runs with 224. The Trojans scored 214 in 2013. Louden Conte, who scored three times against the Mikes, set the Trojans’ single-season record with 38.
Garitt Woodburn was the winning pitcher.
• Carmichaels played two games Monday, winning at Jefferson-Morgan, 7-1.
Michael Blasinsky had a two-run double in the Mikes’ five-run fourth inning, which gave Carmichaels a 7-0 lead.
Josh Bogucki had two hits and two RBI to back the winning pitching of Jacob Kinsell, who threw a three-hit complete game with seven strikeouts to improve his record to 5-1.
Carmichaels is playoff-bound with a 7-3 mark in section play. The Mikes are 11- 3 overall with two of the losses to California.
• Jefferson-Morgan also played two games Monday. The Rockets played at Albert Gallatin in a non-section game and the Colonials scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2.
The game was a fantastic pitchers’ duel between AG’s Nick Groover and J-M’s Austin Clark. Groover threw a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Clark struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
J-M (6-10) led 2-0 in the fifth when AG’s Joey Embacher hit a solo homer. The Colonials (5-12) tied the score in the seventh on a solo home run by Caleb Dempsey and pushed across the winning run with a two-out single.
• Alex Berger and Zach Rohaley combined to scatter seven hits as Canon-McMillan defeated Peters Township, 3-2, in Section 5-AAAA.
Matt Mish had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the playoff-bound Big Macs (9-3, 13-4) ahead, 3-0. Alex Mundy hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for the Indians (5-7. 10-9).
Andrew Wuenstel doubled for Canon-McMillan. Phil Mary was the losing pitcher despite allowing just four hits.
Canon-McMillan has won six in a row.
• John Caster and Seth Delposen both doubled as Eden Christian defeated Avella, 9-5, in Section 5-A.
Austin Plants picked up the victory for Eden Christian (5-4, 7-5).
Losing pitcher Santino Paris hit two home runs for Avella (2-7, 5-8).
• Sam Hockenberry fired a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had had a double and triple, scoring three runs, as Burgettstown defeated Fort Cherry, 12-2, in a six-inning Section 1-AA game.
Dylan Dhans had three hits, including a double and triple, and Brandon Small drove in four runs for the Blue Devils (5-8, 7-9).
Cole Clark drove in both runs for Fort Cherry (4-10, 5-11).
• Shane Roebuck hit a home run and Section 2-AA champion Brownsville held off a late charge by host Beth-Center to edge the Bulldogs, 8-5.
Tucker Pritts hit a triple to back winning pitcher Travis Bevard for Brownsville (11-1, 10-2). The Falcons forged an 8-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning when Beth-Center (3-9, 4-10) mounted its comeback. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the sixth and had the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Beth-Center, which had nine hits but all were singles, left 12 runners on base.
Eddie Zellie had two hits and two RBI for B-C, Nick Pryor had two RBI and Yale Johnston had two singles.
• Mt. Pleasant took advantage of four Waynesburg errors to score eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, then held off a rally and edged the visiting Raiders, 11-9, in a non-section game.
Waynesburg (10-5) pulled to within 8-6 in the third inning and 11-9 in the sixth but couldn’t complete the comeback.
John Glenn Davis and Hunter Robinson each hit a double for Waynesburg. Mt. Pleasant’s record is 6-12.
