Cal to host D-II softball regional
The California University softball team earned the top seed in the Atlantic Region and hosting rights for the opening weekend of the NCAA Division II tournament.
The Vulcans will host the opening rounds at Lilley Field Friday through Sunday. As the top seed, Cal (35-10) will open play in the tournament against eighth-seeded and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion St. Augustine’s (N.C.) (20-12) Friday at 1 p.m. In the other first-round game, fourth-seeded Charleston (36-12) will face fifth-seeded Gannon (28-14) at 3:30 p.m.
In the other Atlantic Regional, West Virginia Wesleyan (35-8) earned hosting rights and the second seed and will face seventh-seeded Seton Hill (31-13-1) in the first round. The other first-round game in Buckhannon, W.Va., has third-seeded West Chester (41-14) against sixth-seed Concord (33-17).
The advancing teams from both opening-round sites will advance to the NCAA Super Regional and play a best-of-three series at the site of the highest remaining seed May 15-16.
