Baseball: McGuffey gets 1st win, beats defending WPIAL champion
McGuffey snapped a 21-game losing streak Wednesday by defeating defending WPIAL champion West Allegheny, 2-1, in a completion of a suspended game from last week in Section 3-AAA.
The last victory for McGuffey was a 6-5 win over Trinity May 1 of last year.
Danny Orr had a two-run triple in the first inning for the Highlanders (1-9, 1-15). Winning pitcher Matt Chambers struck out six and walked two.
Brandon Pouch had an inside-the-park home run for WA (7-3, 13-4).
• Ty Mitchell used his arm and bat to help Bentworth knock off Fort Cherry 6-2 in a non-section game.
Mitchell doubled and picked up the win for the Bearcats (12-4). Tim Kurutz doubled.
Cam Shaub went 3-for-4 with an RBI for FC (5-12).
• Logan Vliet was 2-for-3 with a double and triple, and winning pitcher Dylan Shields smacked a double, as West Greene cruised to a 14-2 victory over visiting Cameron (W.Va.) in five innings.
Shields pitched a complete-game three-hitter. Mike Howard had a triple and Colton Richter doubled as West Greene (5-11), which has won two in a row.
