Softball: With help from Charleroi, Waynesburg makes playoffs
Waynesburg’s softball team had a good day Tuesday, even without winning a game. It was a good day for Carmichaels, too.
Carmichaels clinched the outright Section 2-AA championship by defeating host Waynesburg, 8-0.
Waynesburg, however, clinched a spot in the WPIAL playoffs when Charleroi defeated Bentworth. Waynesburg (7-7, 8-11) finished in a three-way tie for third place with Bentworth and Brownsville. However, Waynesburg and Bentworth each had a 3-1 records in the head-to-head tiebreaker and both the Raiders and Bearcats advance to the postseason while Brownsville is eliminated.
Carmichaels (13-1, 13-3) used a pair of three-run innings to defeat the Raiders. Caroline Cree hit a two-run homer for the Mikes’ big hit, and Emma Lowry had a double. Winning pitcher Erica Burns threw a four-hitter and struck out 10.
The Mikes took advantage of four errors and nine walks by Waynesburg.
• Charleroi only had three hits but made the most of them, scoring five runs in the fourth inning to defeat Bentworth, 6-5, in Section 2-AA.
Sydney Toth had a two-run double in the five-run fifth for the Cougars (5-9, 6-10), who won despite being outhit 11-3. Jen Tilghman was the winning pitcher.
Losing pitcher Casey Hite had two doubles and Mikaela Danley and Chase Watson had one each for Bentworth (7-7, 10-9), which tied Waynesburg for the third playoff spot in the section.
• McGuffey finished in second place in Section 2-AA by defeating host Washington 7-1.
Winning pitcher Moriah McGuier threw a four-hitter and struck out 11 for the Highlanders (12-2, 13-2), who went undefeated in road games. McGuier helped her cause by hitting a double.
Sammie Weiss had a triple for McGuffey and Danielle White and Linsey Mersky each doubled. Meghan Schultz drove in two runs and Emily Irey had a two-run single in the Highlanders’ five-run second inning.
• Tiffany Markovich fired a three-hitter and also doubled as Brownsville defeated Beth-Center, 8-2, in Section 2-AA.
Cheyanne Wasko also doubled for Brownsville (7-7, 7-8), which finished tied for third in the section with Waynesburg and Bentworth but was eliminated from playoff contention via tiebreakers.
Mary Gustovich doubled and scored both runs for Bentworth (5-9, 5-9), which also got a double from Londyn Brown.
• Rebecca Staley had a pair of hits as California closed its season with an 11-1 Section 2-A five-inning victory over Geibel Catholic.
Marley Evans picked up the win for the Trojans (2-8, 2-14), allowing two hits.
Geibel is 0-10, 0-11.
• Kayla Alderson and Macie Kesneck drove in three runs each as Chartiers-Houston defeated Jeannette, 16-1, in three innings in a non-section game.
Kaitlyn Dittrich allowed just one hit and Jalynn Myers doubled, while Kayla Elliott tripled for the Bucs (17-6).
