Baseball: California finishes regular season 17-1
Winning pitcher Garritt Woodburn scattered six hits Thursday as playoff-bound California finished its regular season with a 6-4 non-section win over Connellsville.
Johnny DeFranco and Louden Conte both doubled for California (17-1).
Connellsville is 10-9.
• Spencer Barber broke a tie score in the third inning with a run-scoring double and South Fayette’s pitching held visiting Canon-McMillan scoreless the rest of the way for a 5-4 non-section victory.
Winning pitcher Drake Bower struck out five and combined with Cam Hoover, who got the final three outs for a save.
Canon-McMillan, which will enter the Class AAAA playoffs with a 13-6 record, had nine hits including triples by Chandler Palyas and Jared Beach. Tanner Piechnick and Zach Rohaley doubled.
Brian Coyne doubled for South Fayette (7-9).
• Michael Blasinsky hit a game-tying two-run homer and Joel Spishock drove in the eventual game-winning run two innings later as playoff-bound Carmichaels defeated visiting McGuffey 5-3 in a non-section game.
Blasinsky tied the score at 3-3 with his homer in the third inning, and Spishock gave Carmichaels a 4-3 lead in the fifth a run-scoring single. Spishock, who also doubled, scored an insurance run in the fifth on a single by Jacob Wamsley.
Mike Ludrosky was the winning pitcher in relief for Carmichaels (12-3).
Matt Chambers hit a triple for McGuffey (1-13).
• Tim Kurutz hit a three-run homer as Bentworth outlasted Monessen, 10-5, in a non-section game.
Hunter Neely had four hits, Robby Schultz tripled and Ty Mitchell and winning pitcher Josh Hughes both doubled for playoff-bound Bentworth (14-4).
Losing pitcher Joe Ruffolo had two triples and Mark Gibson a double for Monessen (6-10).
• Santino Paris and winning pitcher Derek Allen led Avella’s 17-hit attack as the Eagles defeated winless Mapletown 16-4 in five innings.
Paris hit two doubles and Allen was 3-for-3 with a double. Dalton Simonelli and Cody Dobbin each had a triple, and Ryan Comfort doubled for Avella (7-8).
