Rohanna shoots 67, finishes in second at Symetra Classic
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Waynesburg High School graduate Rachel Rohanna shot a 67 to tie for the low round of the day Saturday and finished one stroke off the lead at the Symetra Classic at Raintree Country Club.
Rohanna, who entered the day two strokes behind second-round leader Haley Italia, finished the tournament 11 strokes under par for the tournament, winning $7,351.
Haruka Morita-Wanyaolu won the tournament, also firing a 67 on Saturday to fnish at 12-under par.
Rohanna birdied the par-5 No. 2 and 4 holes on the front nine, along with the par-4 ninth hole. She then birdied No. 12 and 15 to move to 12-under, but a costly bogey on the par-5 No. 16 hole dropped her out of a tie for the lead.
The finish was Rohanna’s second top-five finish of the season. She won the Symetra Tour’s Guardian Retirement Championship April 26.
Na leads Poulter: Kevin Na regained sole possession of the lead with a late birdie Saturday at Colonial, taking a one-stroke advantage over Ian Poulter into the final round.
Na shot a 1-under 69 to reach 11-under 199 at a very damp Hogan’s Alley.
Poulter had a 68. He dropped out of a share of the lead after starting the back nine with a four-putt double bogey. But he was again tied with Na after making a 32-foot birdie putt at No. 15.
Trinity High School graduate Steve Wheatcroft shot a 1-over 71 for the second consecutive day, putting him at 2-over. He made the cut on Friday but will not finish.
With their golf balls close to each other on the No. 17 green, Poulter had a 15-foot birdie try that slid by the hole. Na then made his 14-footer to reclaim the outright lead.
Charley Hoffman was third at 9 under after a 66.
Chris Kirk, a two-time PGA Tour winner last season, had a 65 for the best round of the day and was tied for fourth at 8 under with Brandt Snedeker (66).
Defending champion Adam Scott carded his second consecutive 66 since an opening 72. He was tied for 10th at 6 under in a group that included Jordan Spieth, the 21-year-old Masters champion from Dallas playing the first of consecutive weeks at home in North Texas. Spieth, the first-round co-leader after a 64, followed his second-round 73 with a 67.
Montgomerie takes commanding lead: Defending champion Colin Montgomerie shot a 2-under 70 on The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort to take a three-shot lead in the Senior PGA Championship.
Montgomerie birdied the par-4 18th to reach 5-under 211. The Scot won last year at Harbor Shores in Michigan, and also won the U.S. Senior Open in July in Oklahoma.
Bernhard Langer was second after a 68. He eagled the 415-yard, par-4 eighth hole – holing a 7-iron from 162 yards – and closed with consecutive birdies after a bogey at the par-5 16th.
Scott Verplank, Esteban Toledo and Brian Henninger were tied for third at 1 under. Verplank shot 70, Toledo 73, and Henninger 74.
Henninger made a triple bogey on the 16th to drop out of a share of the lead. His second shot on the 539-yard hole darted right, into deep, deep rough and he had to declare his ball lost.
Second-round leader Tom Lehman had a 79 to drop into a tie for 13th at 2 over.
Two share top spot: South Korea’s Byeong Hun An shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the third-round lead with Italy’s Francesco Molinari in the BMW PGA Championship.
Byeong birdied the final two holes to reach 14 under on Wentworth’s West Course. Molinari had a 68.
Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee was third at 12 under after a 68. England’s Tommy Fleetwood was another stroke back after a 65, and 51-year-old Spanish star Miguel Angel Jimenez was 10 under after a 68.
Jimenez, the 2008 winner, had his European Tour-record 10th hole-in-one, acing the 148-yard second hole with a 9-iron. He has three aces this season.
Fleetwood made an albatross on the par-5 fourth hole, holing a 7-iron from 198 yards.
