Big inning carries Wild Things to victory
SAUGET, Ill. – The Wild Things scored six runs in the fifth inning, and Danny Poma hit a home run, as Washington defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 7-4 Friday night at GCS Ballpark.
The win extends the Wild Things’ winning streak to three games.
Gateway led 2-0 before Washington took control of the game with its big inning.
The Wild Things loaded the bases with no outs before a sacrifice fly by David Popkins scored Jeudy Valdez with Washington’s first run.
C.J. Beatty followed with a two-run single off the left-field wall that gave the Wild Things the lead for good at 3-2.
Lee Orr and John Fidanza added run-scoring singles in the inning around an error that allowed Sam Mende to score.
Poma hit a solo home run in the ninth inning.
Washington starting pitcher Tim Flight (2-0) struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings.
