Hill’s goal enables WVU women to advance
Amanda Hill, a Trinity High School graduate, scored one of West Virginia’s two goals in less than two minutes to help the Mountaineers defeat Oklahoma State 2-1 in the first round of the Big 12 Soccer Championships Wednesday afternoon at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo.
Ten minutes after senior goalkeeper Hannah Steadman stopped a penalty kick to keep the match scoreless, top-seeded West Virginia (16-1-1) got two goals to advance to the semifinal for the third consecutive season. The Mountaineers will face the winner of Oklahoma and Texas Tech Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Sophomore forward Amandine Pierre-Louis scored the first goal in the 81st minute, converting on a chance inside the 18-yard box. One-hundred seconds later, Hill, a senior midfielder, scored her fourth goal of the season as she spun with the ball near the top of the 18-yard box and fired her shot toward the left post for the two-goal lead.
“We had great senior leadership across the field today, but especially from Hannah with her huge penalty-kick save and Amanda, who was our quarterback the whole game,” head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said.
Hill had four of the Mountaineers’ 24 shots on goal.
